Confirmation of the upcoming release of a new expansion for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt was met with excitement, despite being one of the worst-kept secrets in gaming. Although details about Songs of the Past are limited, it aims to narratively connect to the Ciri-led next installment in the main series.

The DLC does not have a release date yet, but developer CD Projekt Red has started preparing players for its arrival through various announcements. There are several caveats that players should be aware of, with one coming into effect sooner than the others.

On the official CD Projekt Red website, the company announced that they are discontinuing support for Windows 10 players for The Witcher 3. This decision follows Microsoft’s similar move, with the developer stating that “without ongoing security updates, official platform support, and continued GPU driver support, we will no longer test our games on Windows 10.”

Estimates suggest there are nearly a billion machines that have not upgraded beyond Windows 10, many likely due to stricter hardware requirements. This leaves those users without support unless they upgrade to the latest operating system version. The same applies to Cyberpunk 2077, although running that game likely indicates your computer can support Windows 11.

Additionally, there are changes to the system requirements for The Witcher 3. The complete list of new requirements is as follows:

• CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 2600, Intel Core i5-8400
• GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660, AMD Radeon RX 5500 XT 8GB
• VRAM: 6 GB
• RAM: 12 GB
• Storage: 70 GB SSD
• OS: 64-bit Windows 11

This update will go live with the next patch, which will also discontinue support for HDDs and require Direct X 12 exclusively.

No release date has been set for the new expansion yet, but it is expected sometime next year. Whether this means that The Witcher 3 will be Geralt of Rivia’s last appearance remains uncertain, but hopefully he receives a fitting farewell if it is.
