Witcher Replacement Found by Netflix

When The Witcher first arrived onscreen, it looked set to be the next Game of Thrones. The adaptation of Andrzej Sapkowski’s iconic dark fantasy books contained some of the best fantasy monsters of all time, became one of Henry Cavill’s best TV shows, and despite not being strictly faithful to the original books, it was a solid beginning for the series. Unfortunately, the drastic changes to the source material and an increasingly disjointed plot left viewers looking for a Witcher TV replacement on Netflix, and while few have lived up to its potential, Netflix has now found its answer.

Netflix’s new Dungeons & Dragons series is making TV history as the first live-action Dungeons & Dragons TV series ever created. Both Critical Role and the movie Honor Among Thieves have been well-received, while the animated The Legend of Vox Machina and The Mighty Nein have perfect 100% Rotten Tomatoes scores, but the show appears to be taking a different direction. Rather than the typical format involving a group of misfits on a quest, the show is adapting Ravenloft, which is a far darker story with a similar tone to The Witcher, setting the upcoming series up to replace the five-season fantasy.

Dungeons & Dragons: Ravenloft Is Netflix’s Best Option For A Witcher Replacement

Like The Witcher, Ravenloft is full of dark magic and tragic romance, with the story also blending Gothic horror and dark fantasy. Deadline reports that the series will follow “the making of the vampire Darklord Strahd von Zarovich, whose story of power, love, obsession, and undead transformation charts his origins from tragic antihero to one of Dungeons & Dragons’ most notorious villains.” As the Netflix series will be an origin story, this suggests the streaming platform is setting up the wider lore of Dungeons & Dragons, which could be a game changer for its fantasy content.

Created by Tracy and Laura Hickman, Ravenloft debuted in 1983.

The franchise has so much lore that an upcoming Dungeons & Dragons TV series could, in theory, last forever. This puts it in a better starting place than The Witcher. As one of TV’s most frustrating fantasy series due to its wasted potential, The Witcher‘s decline has left space for a new dark fantasy TV show, with its fanbase looking for a series that will do its source material justice while looking just as aesthetically exciting. Ravenloft‘s grim tone and monster-infested setting mirrors some of the best moments in The Witcher, making it Netflix’s best option for its replacement.

Dungeons & Dragons Is Already Avoiding The Witcher’s Biggest Problem

Many of TV’s best adaptations have been faithful to the source material to avoid alienating the core fanbase, which makes some of the creative decisions behind The Witcher seem inexplicable, with the showrunner reportedly hiring writers who hated the original books and even actively mocked them, according to an article in SFFGazette. As a well-known fan of the books and the face of the series, Henry Cavill leaving The Witcher after season 3 was a shocking move and rumored to be connected to the show’s major changes to the story and tone.

With The Witcher series quickly losing its original fanbase, there was not enough appeal to draw in new viewers to replace it. On the other hand, the recent Dungeons & Dragons projects have captured the spirit of the original games, with creators and writers understanding the factors that have given the franchise such an enormous and dedicated fanbase. The movie and TV shows balance fan service with ease of understanding, drawing new viewers in even if they have never played Dungeons & Dragons, and Ravenloft is likely to follow this same strategy with a creative team that is ideal for the project.

No actors have been announced yet, but with so many celebrity Dungeons & Dragons players, there should be no shortage of casting possibilities. Experienced dark fantasy writer John August (Dark Shadows, Corpse Bride) is onboard, with Academy Award-winning filmmaker Alfonso Cuarón (Gravity, Children of Men) as executive producer, setting Dungeons & Dragons up with a highly accomplished team that is perfectly positioned to finally bring the iconic source material to the screen as a live-action production.
