X-Men Major Character Redesign Unveiled After 40 Years

One of the X-Men‘s most ruthless villains receives a major redesign that makes him even more terrifying than usual. Humans’ prejudice towards mutantkind is so cruel that it sometimes eclipses the threats of interdimensional tyrants and twisted mutant supremacists. Whereas ultra-powerful villains like Onslaught and Shadow King are bent on destruction, and mutant antagonists like Cassandra Nova and Magneto are motivated by personal vendettas, anti-mutant humans hate Homo Superior out of fear. So, while the X-Men can fight monsters all day long, they can’t punch or blast away the persistent societal bias that drives ordinary citizens to forge weapons of mass extermination out of pure ideological spite.

Human malice has birthed a legion of villains and advanced cybernetic systems specifically designed to achieve the total erasure of mutantkind. Key figures like Bolivar Trask and William Stryker have used their vast resources and public platforms to wage war against mutants. Techno-organic nightmares like Bastion and Omega Sentinel aren’t human, and they end up being an even bigger threat to the world than mutants, but they are living monuments to humanity’s worst impulses, with adaptive algorithms that lead Homo Superior to the brink of extinction.

When humans and machines come together to attack mutants, the X-Men need to act quickly lest they face an apocalyptic event for their species.

Cameron Hodge Returns With A New Design

Cameron Hodge returns in Gambit Gone #2

On Earth-295’s war-torn, post-Age of Apocalypse timeline, Cameron Hodge rallies all existing anti-mutant human forces for a final purge against mutantkind. Normally, the Earth-616 version of Hodge is a cyborg with a towering, wire-filled, scorpion-like robotic body and nothing organic other than his human face. On Earth-295, the Age of Apocalypse‘s Cameron Hodge possesses a musclebound body covered with biological spine-like protrusions along his back and the top of his head. His signature round glasses now appear as built-in lenses, and his terrifying face looks more skeletal than ever before, with huge sharp teeth in the form of a permanent grin.

Earth-295’s Cameron Hodge looks more anthropomorphic than most of his multiversal selves but he looks even more imposing. This Hodge also leads an anti-mutant faction known as the Brother Magistrates and he uses the remnants of the outcast Morlocks as bait for mutants. His goal is mutant eradication potentially achieved by breaching hidden mutant sanctuaries and executing his campaign while the X-Men are distracted by other battles. The solicitation for Gambit Gone #3 teases that one of the titular Gambits risks everything even his own life to defend the Morlocks from Hodge in the next issue.

Usually Earth-295’s Age of Apocalypse reinventions add exaggerated elements to famous X-Men characters like Wolverine’s huge hairstyle and metallic stump Magneto’s oversized helmet and most characters muscular physiques. However Gambit Gone’s Cameron Hodge has a much more practical shape than his Earth-616 counterpart capable of walking with two legs engaging in physical combat just like any other character. While live-action animated adaptations have only gotten bolder Cameron Hodge’s scorpion design is difficult to translate properly. For instance X-Men: The Animated Series depicted Hodge as a cybernetic villain capable of transforming into a tree-like system made of wires and gears.

Following the success of Gambit Gone #2 is now available from Marvel Comics.
