Will we be seeing a threequel for a cult zombie franchise?
2009’s Zombieland introduced the world to Jesse Eisenberg’s Columbus, Woody Harrelson’s Tallahassee, Emma Stone’s Wichita, and Abigail Breslin’s Little Rock, a found family surviving a zombie apocalypse. In 2019, the cult classic horror comedy got the legacy sequel treatment with the release of Zombieland: Double Tap, with reports of Zombieland 3 entering development.
Eisenberg just reunited with Double Tap co-star Zoey Deutch for Minions & Monsters, the latest prequel entry in the multi-billion-dollar Despicable Me franchise. In an interview with ScreenRant‘s Tatiana Hullender for Minions & Monsters, Eisenberg and Zoey Deutch were asked: “Was this purposefully your comeback together after Zombieland: Double Tap?”
Deutch enthusiastically responded: “Yes, we’re waiting for the third reunion. We need to find out what it is!” “In another medium entirely,” Eisenberg added. Deutch portrays Madison in Double Tap, a sweet but stupid survivor whom the main characters stumble across. Following Minions & Monsters, the actors are apparently eager to work together again.
“And would we get this reunion before or after Zombieland 3?” asked Hullender. Deutch replied: “That’s up to you, [Jesse].” The two then had a back and forth about whether Deutch’s Madison survived Double Tap (she did). “Perfect, then you’d be in the third one,” said Eisenberg. “That’s up to you. You’re the boss,” Deutch quipped back.
Both Zombieland movies were directed by Ruben Fleischer and written by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick. Deutch’s deference to Eisenberg on whether Zombieland 3 will happen is seemingly because he is one of the main stars on whose return the movie hinges. Though his schedule has the potential to delay its release, Eisenberg still seems to casually suggest that Zombieland 3 is happening.
In November 2025, Fleischer said in an interview that he would like to release Zombieland 3 in 2029, making for another even 10-year gap between movies. In the meantime, Eisenberg is busy pursuing a writing and directing career; he is off to a strong start, having earned an Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay for 2024’s A Real Pain (which he also directed).
Eisenberg is now preparing for the release of The Debut, another movie he wrote, directed, and starred in, alongside Paul Giamatti, Julianne Moore, and Halle Bailey. The Debut is on the industry’s radar as a potential awards season contender. Eisenberg may also find attention directed at him when The Social Reckoning hits theaters in October, the loose sequel to The Social Network.
But Eisenberg has not forgotten about the franchise that was his breakout role, and while Deutch has starred in Nouvelle Vague, Anniversary, Invincible, and more in recent years, she is also standing by for the next installment. Fans will have to wait and see when Woody Harrelson, Emma Stone, and Abigail Breslin will also be available to make the threequel happen.
Zombieland and Zombieland: Double Tap are both available to stream on Netflix.
