If you’ve been feeling a little extra chill in the air recently, it’s because Spooky Season has officially kicked off as we count down the days to Halloween. Here on JoBlo, we’re all about horror, but we’re also frustrated by the way the genre has consistently been overlooked at awards time. Think about all your favorite horror films and how badly they’ve been snubbed. The Shining, Alien, Psycho — pretty much all of the greatest horror films of all time have been overlooked come Oscar time. Although that does seem to be changing a bit, with Weapons getting some love last year and Sinners scoring loads of nominations, including a win for star Michael B. Jordan. Horror may finally be getting a little more respect from the Academy, even if it’s long overdue.

Perhaps in a nod to how essential the genre is to film history, the Academy Museum in Los Angeles is using Spooky Season to unveil its new “Horror Show” exhibit, which is a trip through the history of the genre on film. Pretty much every major horror artifact you could hope to see is there, from Bela Lugosi’s cape from the original Dracula to the original facehugger from Alien, and even Hannibal Lecter’s restraints and face mask from The Silence of the Lambs (one of the few horror films definitely not overlooked by the Academy). For horror fans, it’s an incredible collection that traces just how much the genre has evolved over the decades, while also paying tribute to some of the filmmakers, performers, monsters, and iconic images that made us afraid to turn the lights off.

If you’re bummed that you can’t make it to Los Angeles to see the exhibit for yourself, we have the next best thing here at JoBlo! Our man Ryan Cultrera was on hand for The Horror Show’s grand opening and put together a terrific video tour of all the exhibits, giving you an up-close look at some of the coolest pieces on display. He even caught the opening remarks, which were made by one of the all-time greatest horror icons, Robert Englund — Freddy Krueger himself!

Check out the video above for Ryan’s tour of The Horror Show, and also take a look at some of our pics from the exhibit below:

If you’re in Los Angeles, you can buy tickets to the exhibit HERE! It runs all the way until July 25th.
