Aerosmith’s Last 2 Shows: Are They Really Final Performances?

The first California Dream On show by Aerosmith at the Hollywood Bowl has concluded, leaving fans puzzled about the band’s future.

During the Oct. 29 concert, comedian Bill Burr announced that “this amazing event” would mark the “final two shows in Aerosmith’s history.”

This declaration elicited a mix of cheers and bewildered expressions. The California Dream On performances have been marketed as Aerosmith’s comeback shows, raising questions about whether the iconic Boston rock band is indeed bidding farewell.

However, the band has not confirmed that these are farewell performances, nor have they addressed Burr’s statement. While the atmosphere on the first night was celebratory, it also hinted at a deeper sentiment.

In contrast, SiriusXM’s Eddie Trunk refuted this idea, stating he has no information suggesting that the Aerosmith & Friends shows are the band’s final performances. He correctly noted that promotional language for the two shows did not indicate any finality.

Throughout the evening, renowned artists like Heart, Sammy Hagar, the Black Crowes, and Guns N’ Roses expressed their admiration for Aerosmith’s legacy in music. The atmosphere felt reminiscent of a grand retirement celebration.

During Aerosmith’s closing set, frontman Steven Tyler spoke as if these performances marked the culmination of a long journey.

“Before we say goodnight, I just want to say what a ride it’s been with my brothers – Joe, Tom Brad and Joey,” Tyler shared. “Fifty-five fucking years, and we’re the same fucking band that started fifty-five and a half years ago.”

Aerosmith’s Recent Health Problems

Health challenges have affected Aerosmith in recent years. Drummer Joey Kramer has faced shoulder and back injuries, leading to his near retirement from performing.

He was only able to perform one song with the band on Thursday night, marking his first Aerosmith performance since 2020. In 2023, Tyler’s larynx and vocal cord damage forced the cancellation of what was intended to be their farewell tour.

The shortened set at the Bowl seemed to accommodate Tyler’s condition. While his singing voice remained strong, he avoided pushing it through a full concert’s demands. For context, Aerosmith typically performed an average of 18 songs per set during their 2022 Las Vegas residency.

If Aerosmith were indeed retiring, one might expect a final show to occur in their hometown of Boston rather than Los Angeles. Currently, the Nov. 1 Hollywood Bowl concert is their only scheduled performance left. Just because these shows carry a feeling of farewell doesn’t necessarily mean it’s goodbye. The band deserves time to determine their future direction. They will be remembered as one of rock history’s greatest acts, regardless of when they take their final bow.
