Ari Aster has offered a rare glimpse into his future plans as a filmmaker. Ari Aster provides an update on his upcoming films
Ari Aster has revealed that he already has multiple films in development, including one that is scheduled to begin filming later this year. Speaking during a Q&A appearance at the American Cinematheque’s Bleak Week event, the director disclosed that he is currently juggling several projects, with another film already lined up after his next production.
Discussing his workload, Aster said, “I’ve got a few films that I want to make right now.” He explained that he is preparing to shoot one project in November and is simultaneously working on additional scripts. “I’m writing a third, but I’m shooting something this November, and I’ve got another one lined up,” he said. The filmmaker added, “[I’m] writing something now that I might be able to do between them. I don’t know. Yeah, I just hope I can keep making movies.”
Aster did not reveal the film set to begin production later this year. However, the timeline closely matches reports surrounding Scapegoat, an upcoming A24 production that has already attracted considerable attention. The project has been linked to Scarlett Johansson, who is expected to lead the cast. Meanwhile, Aster wrote and is expected to direct the project.
Plot details have not been officially announced. However, according to a report from Nexus Point News, Johansson will play a surgeon whose life is upended after a patient dies during an operation. The patient is reportedly a celebrity figure inspired by influencer-turned-boxer Jake Paul. The plot centers on the fallout that follows the incident and the challenges faced by Johansson’s character.
Aster also reflected on the creative approach that guides his work. “I don’t want to repeat myself, but I also don’t want to compromise or become too strategic,” he said. For now, Aster’s comments confirm that he has several films in development.
