Speaking about this with Empire Magazine, MJ star Zendaya says the creative decision at the end of No Way Home leads to a “heartbreaking” situation. The first Spider-Man: Brand New Day trailer reveals that MJ is now dating someone else, leaving Peter to watch from the sidelines.
“As someone who cares about the characters and cares about these films, it’s like, ‘Oh my God, it’s so heartbreaking.’ You just feel so bad because you want them to be happy, and you know ultimately they would be happier together,” said Zendaya.
Peter and MJ’s interaction in the trailer was low on romance, but new marketing photos tease the evolution of their relationship. In a new photo shared by Empire, Spider-Man and MJ are seen beside what appears to be the former’s makeshift home lab. The photo suggests that MJ may help Spider-Man once again.
Previous marketing materials have already spoiled some of the film’s villain twists. Those keeping track of the film’s associated merchandise will know that a savage Hulk will face off against Spider-Man. Besides Hulk, the film also contains other foes and potential allies for Spider-Man, including the Hand and the Punisher.
Tom Holland has already started teasing Spider-Man’s eventual role in the MCU, which may include ushering in a new generation of Spider-people. Before that happens, Brand New Day will feature many classic Spidey elements from the comics.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day will be released in theaters on July 31, 2026.
