Colman Domingo is a favorite to score an Oscar nomination in the Best Supporting Actor category for his performance in the blockbuster Michael Jackson biopic, Michael. The movie defied mediocre reviews and pushback from Jackson’s detractors to gross more than $1 billion at the worldwide box office. Domingo’s most recent Oscar nomination, however, came for a movie whose reception couldn’t have been more different. Released in 2024, the film in question is currently streaming in the United States on HBO Max, but not for much longer. It marked the feature directorial debut of Greg Kwedar, who wrote the screenplay with Clint Bentley. The duo also wrote the critically acclaimed Netflix drama Train Dreams, with Bentley at the helm instead.
Starring Joel Edgerton, Train Dreams remains one of the most acclaimed movies of 2025. It holds a “Certified Fresh” 93% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, where the consensus reads, “A gorgeous meditation on America, ably shouldered by one of Joel Edgerton’s very best performances, Train Dreams takes on mythic proportions while maintaining an intimate emotional delicacy.” The meditative drama scored four nominations at the Oscars, including in the Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay categories. It was the second writing nomination in a row for Kwedar and Bentley, following the 2024 movie they made with Domingo.
