Chrono Trigger has secured its place among the greatest JRPGs of all time. The iconic designs by Akira Toriyama, the innovative time-travel mechanics, and the classic combat system have contributed to its legendary status. While it’s challenging to identify a single reason for its enduring popularity since the SNES era, the game’s memorable characters play a significant role in its lasting appeal.
Although fans are eagerly awaiting a remake or remaster announcement, there is exciting news for devoted Chrono Trigger fans. An official post from Square Enix reveals that a new collection will be released this year.
This year in Japan, Square Enix is releasing “One Mark Collection” gacha physical keychains for Chrono Trigger. These will be available in Japan as part of a region-specific promotion, but they can also be imported online. The complete set is priced at approximately $140 USD.
There are 15 types in total, featuring both standing and action poses for the six main characters: Chrono, Marle, Lucca, Frog, Robo, Ayla, and Magus. Additionally, a “mystery” character will be included, which is a Nu (the blue creatures with green hair often associated with Chrono Trigger).
You can find these keychains throughout Japan, with Kansai having the highest number of locations (though options are also available in Tokyo, Hokkaido, Tohoku, Kanto, Chubu, Chugoku, Shikoku, and Kyushu).
Each pull costs 500 yen, making it relatively easy to collect the entire set if you aim to get one of each character. If you’re searching for these in Japan, we recommend using the official site that details the locations by prefecture. Square Enix has noted that stock may vary by store and that the collection could also be available at other retailers not listed.
Chrono Trigger is a timeless franchise that can resurface unexpectedly. It is part of a broader series that includes Radical Dreamers and Chrono Cross. There was even an unproduced third game titled Chrono Break.
This enduring popularity can also pose challenges for Chrono Trigger. The original game is so cherished that any merchandise release garners attention, and Square Enix has little motivation to develop a sequel or re-release when the original remains available on various platforms, including PC. One day, I hope we can experience this time-traveling adventure in a new format.
