Clayface’s Power Compared to Batman in a DCU Showdown

Warning! This article includes SPOILERS for Clayface.Clayface is now out, and the new DC Universe movie hits the ground running, setting up a powerful new villain for the live-action future of Batman’s corner of the DCU. Clayface has always been a powerful villain in DC Comics, animation, video games, and more. After all, he belongs to what is one of the best rogues’ galleries in comics, if not the very best.

Batman’s hall of villains is a true embarrassment of riches. The Dark Knight consistently fights powerful and unique characters like Poison Ivy, Bane, Killer Croc, Mister Freeze, Clayface, and many more. Even though Batman is human, not having any powers, he is able to go toe-to-toe with these villains and beat them in fights by using a wide array of gadgets, Batsuits, and more.

The DCU Chapter One will mark Batman’s debut in the franchise. Interestingly, both Batman, in a non-speaking role, and Clayface, then voiced by Alan Tudyk, first appeared in the DCU in animated form through James Gunn’s Creature Commandos series on HBO Max. That said, they did not meet, and Batman’s full-on DCU debut is saved for the solo movie The Brave and The Bold.

Despite the fans’ wishes, Batman does not appear in DC’s Clayface movie. That said, there is plenty of action to go around in the Dark Knight’s absence. As Matt Hagen grows more powerful and unstable throughout the new DC movie, Clayface becomes one of the most formidable characters in the franchise, and this is how he compares to what we know of Batman:

Clayface’s Powers & Abilities In The DCU Explained

Clayface starts with Hagen being injected with nanobots to try and recover from horrific facial injuries caused by a gangster and his crew. This is an updated take on the character’s origin story, which leans more technological in the DCU. Initially, Clayface gets a healing factor out of the ordeal, being able to recover from blood loss, cut skin, and other injuries instantly. After Hagen overdoses on the nanotech, his molecular makeup is forever changed. It is this that gives Clayface his traditional powers from the comics and eventually leads to Hagen becoming the monstrous figure he was in Creature Commandos.

Clayface is an actor-turned-villain with shape-shifting powers, being able to not only change his face to mimic someone else but also create clothes out of his own skin, making for the perfect covert fighter. Clayface can also manipulate his body into any shape or object he wants to, making him a hard villain to plan against in a fight. His healing factor is also improved now that his molecular structure has been changed, with Clayface ever surviving Dr. Caitlyn Corr’s kill switch. At the end of the movie, Hagen turns into the towering Clayface monster form DC fans know, becoming quite powerful.

How Clayface’s Power Compares To Other Batman Villains

Batman has a wide array of villains in the comics, ranging from those who do not have powers but are master tacticians like the Joker and the Riddler to those who are incredibly strong or have other superpowers. In that category, there are many noteworthy Batman villains. Clayface is a more brute type of fighter, being more akin in a sense to DC villains like Bane, Killer Croc, and Solomon Grundy. The latter is likely the closest villain in Batman’s Rogues’ Gallery in the comics when it comes to someone that could match Clayface’s feats of power and versatile abilities.

Solomon Grundy and Clayface are both known for their monstrous exteriors. The two Batman villains also possess nearly indestructible skin with potent healing factors that make for a killer combo against the Dark Knight and other heroes. That said, they differ in one key aspect as Solomon Grundy does not come close to Clayface when it comes to stealth skills. While the new DCU villain can impersonate other people and change his body into any shape or object he wishes, Solomon Grundy will always stick out like a sore thumb in every scenario with his towering figure and chalk white skin.

Has Clayface Defeated Batman In DC Comics?

Clayface made his comic book debut back in 1940, which means that the DC villain has been fighting Batman in comics animation video games and more for several decades. As such obviously Clayface has won some fights against Batman throughout the Dark Knight’s long history. One of those times came in group form as The Mud Pack of which the Basil Karlo version of Clayface served as the leader managed to initially subdue Batman. They did so mainly through psychological warfare which included preying on Batman’s guilt and trauma of the death of Jason Todd version of Robin.

More recently in DC Comics’ hit Absolute Batman title this stronger version of Dark Knight was unable to beat Clayface who shape-shifted to look just like Batman as two fought. He toyed with DC hero for a bit even though Batman was enraged by fact that Clayface killed this universe’s version of Tim Drake while pretending to be him Bruce Wayne could not put a dent in DC villain during their fight. This just goes to show how powerful Clayface is compared to all versions of Batman.

Batman might not appear in DC’s Clayface movie but that does not mean that chances of Dark Knight fighting villain in DCU are over. On contrary it seems like this match-up has only become more likely. After all Clayface now has an entire movie of character development on his back so he would be a villain that audiences would both be rooting to win and lose against Batman due to Matt Hagen’s tragic backstory at same time.

Additionally DC’s Clayface movie shows villain starting to understand his powers and upgrade himself as story progresses. It is only at end of film that Clayface turns into his full-on monster form by that point he is powerful enough to become two people and have full conversation between them. As such,Clayface does a phenomenal job of setting up villain’s power leaves him in place where Matt has fully become villain filled with rage which could put him on collision path with Batman in future DCU movies.
