For decades, generation after generation has grown up with Doctor Who, making the BBC institution one of Britain’s most beloved sci-fi staples. However, after years of shake-ups, the end of its Disney+ partnership and the cancellation of its planned 2026 Christmas special, the TARDIS has been left parked indefinitely. While the BBC insists Doctor Who isn’t cancelled, its future remains uncertain, leaving a sizable void in British television. Fortunately, British sci-fi may already have the perfect replacement waiting in the wings.
Nearly 50 years after it first aired, Blake’s 7 is reportedly being rebooted under the guidance of Doctor Who and The Last of Us director Peter Hoar, bringing Terry Nation’s cult classic back into the spotlight. The original series followed a band of rebels, criminals and political dissidents battling the totalitarian Terran Federation. It gave audiences a very different kind of space adventure, one that was darker, grittier and far more morally complicated than the Doctor’s travels through time and space. That distinction could be exactly why Blake’s 7’s reboot is the show British sci-fi fans need right now.
Doctor Who may still technically have another regeneration ahead of it, but until the TARDIS lands again, Blake’s 7 has a chance to give audiences something equally familiar. The original Blake’s 7 ended in a rather bleak finale back in 1981, and audiences have since wished for a return. Several attempts made over the years never quite materialized, but this latest effort feels like it has the timing and ambition needed to pull through, judging by the names behind it.
