Detective Series on Prime Video Breaks Long-Standing TV Rule

Prime Video is set to deliver a detective show that stands out on television, not just because the main character possesses abilities reminiscent of Marvel Comics. Spider-Noir, featuring Nicolas Cage, is embracing a traditional approach to the noir genre while also providing an option that fans of Marvel movies will find familiar.

The first glimpse of Nicolas Cage as Spider-Man Noir was in 2018’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, where he voiced a different version of Peter Parker. In Spider-Noir, Cage portrays Ben Reilly, a private detective in 1930s New York and the sole superhero in the city. Ben has faced better days and must confront a personal tragedy.

When the new series premieres on MGM+ and Prime Video, viewers will have the choice to watch either in color or black-and-white, as the final Spider-Noir trailer showcases both formats, offering a preview of what to expect. The two trailers are edited identically, but the color difference creates a significant impact.

The two options for one show are enough to break a rule of television that has lasted for decades. A project is usually produced in one form or another, aside from occasional exceptions. A live-action project on the scale of Spider-Noir, available in both formats, is unprecedented and nearly impossible before streaming services emerged.

Add to this that Spider-Noir brings an Academy Award winner to television for his first leading role on screen; this show will undoubtedly stand out among releases in 2026.

Other TV Shows Have Had Black & White Episodes, But Spider-Noir Is Different

Classic shows like The Twilight Zone and I Love Lucy were originally released in black-and-white while more modern series have produced special black-and-white episodes before returning to color. This format change works especially well with genre shows like The X-Files, Fringe, WandaVision, and Black Mirror.

However, fans of those shows generally can’t get more than an episode or two of black-and-white before switching back to all-color programming. That won’t be true for Spider-Noir , as there will be two versions of the season that are identical in every way except for color grading: ‘Authentic Black & White’ and ‘True-Hue Full Color.’

Executive producers Chris Miller and Phil Lord discussed how they made such an ambitious idea into reality while speaking with the outlet Asian Journal. Lord credited Amazon for committing to the ‘insanely difficult color timing job’, as well as ‘understanding its value and investing in it.’

Miller explained how filmmakers accomplished capturing one show in two ways:

“When we were on set, the LUT we saw on monitors was black-and-white. We were always ensuring it would work in black-and-white while capturing the color version as well.” He added that there was significant work involved with adjusting for color.

Spider-Noir isn’t a black-and-white project that had to be colorized later like what happened with films such as It’s a Wonderful Life . Two versions were captured simultaneously on set for this series leading to a truly unique finished product unlike anything else on television.

Black & White Vs. Color: Which Version Should You Watch First?

The choice may depend on personal taste among viewers. Those entering into it from a love for Marvel’s Spider-Man comics or MCU may prefer the color version while those drawn by noir genre elements might opt for black-and-white first.

The “Authentic Black & White Trailer ” has garnered approximately six million views on YouTube while “true-Hue Full Color ” has about four million views at this time.

Nicolas Cage shared which version he preferred during an interview with Esquire:

Cage believes “ teenage viewers will appreciate color,” but hopes those watching black-and-white “ would instill some interest in them to look at earlier movies and enjoy that as an art form as well.”

This series will consist of eight episodes when it debuts on May twenty-seven on Prime Video after airing on MGM+’s broadcast channel two days earlier so watching both versions wouldn’t take too long.

A current knowledge of Spider-Man lore from other sources isn’t necessary since it’s not set within MCU continuity nor does it continue from previous Spider-Verse films.

The possibility remains whether or not<em> Spider-Noir </ em > will receive an order for a second season since Nicolas Cage has never starred in an ongoing TV show throughout his career thus far but perhaps this Prime Video show could be an exception given his role as executive producer alongside starring actor.
