Doomsday Test Screening Rumors Spark Strong Reactions

Avengers: Doomsday is poised to become one of the most significant films in cinematic history. This may not solely refer to box office performance, but rather the immense cast and likely substantial budget, which could lead to a moon orbiting soon due to its scale. The return of original stars from the MCU, alongside the Fantastic Four and the original X-Men, plus a familiar face as the antagonist, is monumental. However, according to one of its stars, it’s not just the film’s magnitude that will impress audiences; the footage already shown is incredibly striking.

In an interview with Collider’s Perri Nemiroff at the Gotham Television Awards, David Harbour, who won Best Supporting Actor in a Limited Series for his role in DTF St. Louis , shared that he had been filming Avengers: Doomsday at Pinewood Studios in London the night before and expressed his amazement after viewing a few minutes of the movie during ADR. He was deeply impressed by what directors Joe Russo and Anthony Russo are creating.

“I was in London last night at 10 PM, London time, on a stage in Pinewood shooting with a bunch of other Avengers. It surprised me when they called me this morning, and they said, ‘You’re late, your car’s outside, you need to get to the airport.’ So that was surprising. But what I will say is this: it’s such an enormous production, the Avengers: Doomsday production. You think to yourself, ‘how are they doing all this?’ and ‘what are they doing with all that money?’ Then I watched just several scenes in ADR, and I was silenced in any of my critique by going, ‘Wow, these Russo brothers really understand the secret sauce of these films [and] what they do.’ It’s a mythology. It’s a broad emotional mythology that is just vivid and vast in a way. And this movie, and I’ve seen like maybe six minutes of it, and it is as good as anything I’ve seen, so I’m very impressed with it.”

Harbour’s observations align with recent teasers from the Russos about the film. Joe Russo previously described Doomsday as a “complete reinvention” for Marvel, stating that audiences will be caught off guard by what transpires in the film. This aspect is crucial for Marvel as they aim to regain audience interest after several years that have been somewhat disappointing for box office returns and critical reception.

The return of the Russos is a significant component of that strategy since they previously directed Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame, giving them arguably the most robust track record for major events in the MCU. The screenplay is penned by Stephen McFeely and Michael Waldron, with Marvel Studios keeping official plot details closely guarded for now.
