Dungeon Crawler Carl has found its showrunners.
A television series adaptation of Matt Dinniman’s massively popular science fantasy LitRPG books is in the works at Peacock after receiving a series order in June. It is being produced by Seth MacFarlane’s Fuzzy Door and Universal Global Television, with Chris Yost attached to the project as a writer and audiobook narrator and producer Jeff Hays voicing the fan-favorite cat character Princess Donut.

HBO’s Game of Thrones — the pop-culture juggernaut that made fantasy TV prestige — premiered with the episode “Winter Is Coming.” Across eight seasons it picked up a record 59 Emmy wins. In which year did its first episode air?

Deadline now reports that Yost will be Dungeon Crawler Carl‘s showrunner alongside Eric Heiserrer. Yost has extensive experience in the Star Wars franchise, having previously written episodes of Star Wars Rebels, The Mandalorian, The Bad Batch, and Maul — Shadow Lord. Heisserer previously created, wrote, produced, and served as the showrunner of Netflix’s hit fantasy series Shadow and Bone, which ran for two seasons and was based on Leigh Bardugo’s Grishaverse novels.
Outside of Star Wars, Yost’s other prior credits include co-writing the Marvel Cinematic Universe movies Thor: The Dark World and Thor: Ragnarok, Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender, and creating, writing, and producing Netflix’s live-action Cowboy Bebop. Before Shadow and Bone, Heiserrer wrote Arrival, for which he received an Academy Award nomination, along with the Sandra Bullock-led Netflix movie Bird Box, which remains the streamer’s sixth most-watched movie of all time at 157.4 million views.
With Dungeon Crawler Carl poised to be one of Peacock’s biggest series yet, it makes sense to have chosen showrunners with extensive experience in the science-fiction and fantasy genres, along with having played key roles in projects that have gone on to be major streaming hits. There are already high expectations given the popularity of the books, and this series being a success would be a major win for Peacock.
Yost is already well-versed at working within the dynamics of high-profile franchises. With Shadow and Bone, Heiserrer has experience translating a series of beloved books to television, including the challenge of pulling storylines and characters from multiple novels into a cohesive adaptation. This also involved bringing in the rich world-building and lore of the source material, a skill that will be important for the upcoming Peacock series.
Now that the showrunners have been finalized, one of the next big creative decisions is castingDungeon Crawler Carl‘s titular character. Peter Claffey from, Will Poulter, John Boyega, Cameron Monaghan, and Kit Connor are among many actors who have been fan-cast as Carl; however Connor is less likely to happen after recent confirmation that he has been cast as Scott Summers/Cyclops in MCU’s upcoming movie.
