Jack Ryan Movie Sets Rotten Tomatoes Record for John Krasinski

Hollywood can’t get enough of Jack Ryan as a character, as a brand, as a franchise, but sometimes that means a bit of complacency. Now, we’re talking about a character who’s

been played by multiple stars, sent through several different versions of Tom Clancy’s world, but for many, Prime Video’s Jack Ryan became the definitive on-screen way to depict the character. Now, with a feature-length movie out, surely it would be a roaring success? Well, not if Rotten Tomatoes is anything to go by.

Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan: Ghost War is now streaming on Prime Video, and the new movie has debuted with a rough Rotten Tomatoes record for Krasinski’s era of the franchise. At the time of writing, the film has a 49% audience score, which is easily enough to make it the lowest-rated entry among Krasinski’s Jack Ryan projects with viewers. That number sits slightly above the movie’s 46% critics’ score, but it still puts the film well below the audience scores for every season of the Prime Video series. Basically, it seems like Prime Video may have thought just bringing back the stars was enough but fans have been let down.

Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan: Ghost War stars John Krasinski (A Quiet Place, IF) as Jack Ryan and Wendell Pierce (Selma, Horrible Bosses) as James Greer, with Michael Kelly (Chronicle, Everest) also returning as Mike November. Krasinski also co-wrote the movie alongside Aaron Rabin, with the screenplay credited to franchise veterans and Tom Clancy source material.

However, that’s not to say viewers still haven’t been consuming it, far from it. After debuting on Wednesday, May 20, the film became the most-watched movie on Prime Video in the United States. It has already moved ahead of previous chart-topper No Place to Be Single, along with titles like Crime 101, My Fault: London, and Return to Silent Hill.

Collider’sTania Hussain, who reviewed the movie, said that the movie had the perfect cast and just the right amount of slick action to make it a watchable experience, but that it didn’t quite have the depth needed to justify a full movie. Krasinski, Pierce and Kelly still work well together, with Kelly in particular remaining one of the most reliable bright spots but the story plays things far too safe, and while there are a few strong chase scenes and set pieces,Ghost War never feels as sharp or substantial as it should. In the end, it comes off more like a decent TV movie than a genuinely exciting next chapter.
