Considered to be FromSoftware’s magnum opus, Elden Ring has taken the world by storm since its release back in 2022. Directed by FromSoftware hero Hidetaka Miyazaki with worldbuilding from none other than A Song of Ice and Fire author George R.R. Martin, Elden Ring has cemented itself as a modern-day classic, going on to inspire a hit DLC, roguelike spin-off, and even an upcoming live-action movie.
Whether it is your favorite FromSoftware entry when titles such as Dark Souls and Bloodborne exist is open to interpretation, but there is no denying Elden Ring‘s cultural impact, which is why some fans are eager to see a sequel released in the future. According to Miyazaki himself, he has still not created his “perfect game”, so does this mean that Elden Ring 2 could be it?
Well, at the time of writing, an Elden Ring sequel has not been confirmed or even hinted at by FromSoftware, but it would not be unlike the studio to work on a trilogy, or at least a duology. Yes, it could be a standalone like Bloodborne, but it could also have more of a story to tell like the Dark Souls trilogy. After all, Elden Ring‘s setting of the Lands Between is rich and vast with lore seeping out of every location, character, and item, and so there is plenty of story still left to be told.
It was a potential sequel which was the subject of a discussion over on r/eldenringdiscussion recently after one user asked, “If there was an Elden Ring II, what do you think the setting should be? I’m hoping for a pre-Shattering setting so we could see what the Lands Between would look like before everything was destroyed. Even a Prehistoric Era setting would be cool so we could see what Farum Azula would look like before the meteor destroyed it.”
As you can imagine, every fan has their own opinion and with almost 100 comments in response, it is safe to say that the ideas for an Elden Ring sequel could be limitless. “I’d personally like the Badlands, where Godfrey and the Tarnished went after he was passed over as Elden Lord,” the top comment read. Another agreed, adding, “Some place different to the Lands Between could be really interesting. Allows them to take the story and setting in any direction they choose, and it would be fascinating to see events from Elden Ring referenced in legend, but because it is so far away, no one really knows the truth of it. Just like the players. The Land of Reeds and wherever the Numen arrived from could be interesting options too.”
However, another user hopes that a sequel will take place in the future, as opposed to showing us a world pre-Shattering. “Looks like I have the unpopular opinion, but I want something in the distant future,” they shared. “The age we set into motion long fading along with the influence of the Greater Will, the other outer god factions gaining power and seeing old cults reemerge in a Lands Between we barely recognize through the passage of time.”
Luckily, I would not be in charge of a potential Elden Ring 2 storyline, which is for the best, as all of these ideas sound excellent to me and, let us face it, the majority of us would just love to see more, regardless of what a sequel may entail. For now, however, we must hope that FromSoftware gives us what we want in the future.
