Fast Forever is still progressing, but the film is encountering a significant industry challenge. Director Louis Leterrier has explained why the next Fast & Furious film is taking longer than anticipated. The delay is not related to the story; rather, the team is working to adapt the movie to today’s evolving box office landscape.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter while promoting his Netflix sci-fi thriller The Last House, Leterrier confirmed his dedication to directing the final chapter of the main saga. While waiting for pre-production to align, he has kept himself busy directing other projects.
“I love Fast. I worked very hard on developing the idea for the conclusion and everything. I was fortunate to be part of the franchise. So I can’t wait, but I also cannot wait. Directors don’t sit idle well, so I have to direct,” Leterrier shared.
“I’m contracted. If we go, we go. We’re fortunate to be having a great year [at the box office], but it’s different now. Movies have evolved, tastes have changed, and the box office has transformed. So we need to align our budgetary needs with the realities of the box office. We understand that, and it’s fine. Everyone does that. It’ll be fine,” he added while reaffirming his commitment.
What else do we know about Fast Forever?
Fast Forever will continue from where Fast X concluded. It is anticipated to serve as the final chapter of the main Fast & Furious franchise. Vin Diesel is expected to return, along with several familiar cast members, although Universal Pictures has not confirmed the complete cast.
Before Leterrier, Alan Ritchson expressed similar sentiments regarding the sequel. During an appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, he mentioned that the film’s increasing scale has complicated budget management. The actor stated,
“There has to be a way to show restraint while also honoring the fact that this world has expanded to something enormous. That becomes very challenging; now we’re at a crossroads of something very difficult to navigate.”
Fast Forever is currently slated for release in theaters on March 17, 2028.
