Game of Thrones Prequel Set to Premiere on TV Soon

After a two-year hiatus, Game of Thrones’ prequel spin-off series is returning to HBO Max for Season 3 next month. The new season will continue to explore civil war within the House Targaryen, with the trailer promising an intense war-driven installment this year.

House of the Dragon Season 3 arrives on HBO and HBO Max in June

House of the Dragon Season 3 debuts on Sunday, June 21, 2026, on HBO Max. The streamer announced the release date with a teaser trailer last month.

Set roughly 200 years before the original show, Game of Thrones, House of the Dragon chronicles the rise of House Targaryen and the eventual civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons. It centers on King Viserys I Targaryen’s heirs, each fighting for their claim to the Iron Throne.

The show is based on George R. R. Martin’s 2018 novel Fire & Blood, which is a part of his A Song of Ice and Fire franchise. Interestingly, the events in the book are inspired by the real-life English-Normandy civil war. It is known as The Anarchy and took place between 1138 and 1153.

Ryan Condal and Martin created the HBO Max show. The returning cast for Season 3 includes Emma D’Arcy, Matt Smith, Olivia Cooke, Fabien Frankel, Rhys Ifans, Steve Toussaint, Tom Glynn-Carney, Ewan Mitchell, and Phia Saban, among others.

Rather than large-scale battles like in the book, House of the Dragon Season 2 heavily focused on the political unrest within the Targaryens. However, it paved the way for the Battle of the Gullet, which is likely to happen early in Season 3.

The previous installment also showed Daemon finally accepting Rhaenyra as the rightful heir. Meanwhile, Alicent secretly arrived at Dragonstone to ask her to stop the war. However, Rhaenyra refused to back down after realizing that her terms might not be met.

Instead, in an attempt to turn the war in her favor, Rhaenyra brought in bastard Targaryens to claim the remaining dragons. She gained two new dragon riders at the end of the season. On the other hand, Aegon II, badly injured from the Battle at Rook’s Rest, is secretly smuggled out of King’s Landing.

While Season 3 might include major plot points from the book, it is likely to deviate from it, as Season 2 did.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Martin recalled having creative differences with Condal. “We got into season two, and he basically stopped listening to me. I would give notes, and nothing would happen. Sometimes he would explain why he wasn’t doing it. Other times, he would tell me, ‘Oh, OK, yeah, I’ll think about that.’” the author recalled.
