Considering everything, video game adaptations have had a solid 2026 so far. At the start of the year, The Ghoul (Walton Goggins) and Lucy’s (Ella Purnell) return in Fallout Season 2 dominated the streaming charts, cementing itself as one of the best series of the decade so far. On the big screen, the video game adaptation sequel The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, which features the voices of Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor-Joy, and Jack Black, became the first movie released in 2026 to hit the coveted $1 billion mark at the box office.

However, not every video game adaptation has proven successful in 2026, with Mortal Kombat II sadly falling short at the box office. The sequel to the original adaptation of the classic fighting game debuted in theaters in early May and actually performed well in its first weekend, scoring almost $40 million in domestic revenue and coming second in the box office ranks. Sadly, it was the subsequent few weeks that let Mortal Kombat II down, losing more than 50% each weekend and eventually leaving theaters with just $129 million worldwide against a reported budget of $80 million.

Karl Urban starred in Mortal Kombat II as Johnny Cage, following the conclusion of his epic Prime Video superhero series The Boys. The movie also starred Adeline Rudolph (The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina), Jessica McNamee (The Meg), and Josh Lawson (Anchorman 2), with Simon McQuoid returning to direct following the 2021 original. Despite box office disappointment, Mortal Kombat II has bounced back, officially ranking as the most-watched movie on HBO Max in the world, at the time of writing.
