Masters of the Universe has made a significant comeback on streaming platforms after an underwhelming box-office performance. As the film continues to accumulate impressive viewing time, fans are eagerly anticipating a sequel.
Recently, The Hollywood Reporter referenced Nielsen’s streaming ratings list, where Masters of the Universe achieved the No. 1 position overall. The movie premiered on Prime Video on July 22, shortly after its theatrical release. Within just one week of its streaming debut, the film amassed 1.17 billion minutes of watch time. The only other title to surpass the billion-minute mark is The Big Bang Theory on HBO Max.
Fans have taken to social media to advocate for a sequel. In response to THR’s report, numerous users on X have tagged Mattel, Prime Video, and the official Masters of the Universe X page, urging these companies to approve a sequel.
One fan, @Redpyramid9, commented, “Can we get that Masters of the Universe sequel now?” Another user, @Lisertan, pleaded, “Can we get a sequel pretty please?” A third fan, @JaimeEnFuego, proposed, “Justify a sequel with #SheRa, though?”
Meanwhile, @agentofchaos22 expressed frustration over fans not supporting the movie in theaters. They remarked, “Well don’t mean sh-t lol yall should have gone to the theaters and see it. We could have gotten a sequel lol.”
The $170 million Masters of the Universe movie struggled at the box office
Masters of the Universe grossed just under $114 million worldwide against a budget of $170 million. It was initially expected to earn $30–35 million during its opening weekend but ultimately made $29.3 million. The earnings further declined in the second week, bringing in only $8.6 million. Despite this lackluster box-office performance, the film has become a substantial streaming success as fans continue to call for a sequel.
Directed by Travis Knight, the film features Nicholas Galitzine, Camila Mendes, Idris Elba, Jared Leto, Alison Brie, and more.
