The Bear‘s Italian Beef sandwich received a special recognition. On Wednesday, the iconic dish from the series was designated as the official state sandwich of Illinois.

Ahead of the final season, The Bear’s Italian Beef sandwich was named the official state sandwich of Illinois. The resolution took place in Springfield and included Corey Hendrix, who portrays Gary “Sweeps” Woods on the series. Additionally, a food truck was present at the press event to serve the sandwich (via Variety).
The Illinois House resolution states, “We extend our thanks to the families and proprietors of Italian beef establishments across the State of Illinois in recognition of their enduring contributions to our shared heritage” (via The Hollywood Reporter).
Moreover, the resolution affirmed “commitment to honoring the cultural and economic contributions of the restaurants, food vendors, and hardworking Illinoisans who have kept this tradition alive for generations.”
They also congratulated “the creators, cast and crew of The Bear for their extraordinary portrayal of Chicago’s Italian beef culture.” The resolution acknowledged the team “for shining a national and international spotlight on the State of Illinois.” Furthermore, they expressed gratitude “for inspiring pride in our state’s rich culinary and cultural identity.”
The resolution credited the show for bringing “international attention to one of the great culinary creations of the American Midwest and a defining symbol of Illinois’ vibrant food culture.”
It called the show “a powerful and authentic portrayal of Chicago’s food culture.” This included “immigrant working-class roots, and the spirit of resilience, creativity, and excellence that defines the people of Illinois… [while also introducing] the Italian Beef sandwich to new generations of fans across the globe.” Additionally, the resolution described the dish as an “ambassador of Illinois culture far beyond the state’s borders.”
The Bear Season 5 premieres on June 25, 2026. Jeremy Allen White, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Ayo Edebiri, and Abby Elliott will return to reprise their roles.
