A tragedy has occurred on the pitch during the 2026 World Cup.
In the match on June 18 between Qatar and Canada—a host country for this year’s tournament alongside the United States and Mexico—Canadian Ismaël Koné sustained a severe leg injury that likely ended his participation in this year’s tournament.
Just before the injury, Canada was advancing down the field, and Koné received the ball from teammate Jonathan David. As soon as Koné got the ball, Assim Madibo from Qatar challenged for possession, striking Koné’s leg and causing an audible crack.
As play was halted and the referee called for immediate medical assistance, the camera focused on Koné, who appeared to be in shock while holding what seemed to be a visibly broken leg.
Following the injury, an assistant coach for Canada was heard yelling at a referee, “His leg is hanging off! His leg is hanging off! He’s got a f–king broken leg, man!”
At the same time, Canadian and Qatari soccer players had to be separated as tensions escalated.
