Jurassic World 5 has encountered an unexpected setback following a significant behind-the-scenes change. Director Gareth Edwards has reportedly departed from the sequel, necessitating Universal to seek a new director once again.
This news follows the massive box office success of Jurassic World Rebirth. The reported reason for Edwards’ exit has taken many fans by surprise.
According to a report by The Hollywood Reporter, Edwards left Jurassic World 5 due to creative differences. The movie is still progressing, with David Koepp returning to write the script. Scarlett Johansson, Mahershala Ali, and Jonathan Bailey are anticipated to reprise their roles.
History is repeating itself in the Jurassic World franchise following Gareth Edwards’ exit
This is not the first instance where the franchise has encountered such a situation. Initially, David Leitch was set to direct Jurassic World Rebirth but departed due to creative differences, leading to Edwards’ involvement later.
Universal has refrained from commenting on the circumstances surrounding Edwards’ exit; however, the studio expressed gratitude towards the filmmaker for his contributions. In a statement, they noted, “We had an incredible experience working with Gareth on Jurassic World Rebirth.”
Despite this transition, the sequel remains one of Universal’s most anticipated upcoming films. Steven Spielberg continues his involvement as executive producer, while Frank Marshall remains dedicated to producing the franchise.
Jurassic World Rebirth grossed approximately $872 million at the global box office. The film also introduced a new cast led by Scarlett Johansson, Mahershala Ali, and Jonathan Bailey, paving the way for another adventure.
Sources indicate that Gareth Edwards may now return to creating original films. Prior to directing Jurassic World Rebirth, he helmed the sci-fi film The Creator. Rebirth was the fourth installment in the Jurassic World series and the seventh film in the overall Jurassic franchise. It also emerged as one of Universal’s most significant box office successes, making the director’s departure a noteworthy change for the series.
As of now, Universal has not announced Edwards’ replacement, and Jurassic World 5 remains in development.
