Kylie Minogue and late INXS frontman Michael Hutchence dated for two years nearly three decades ago. But to hear the “Can’t Get You Out of My Head” singer tell it, the memories of that tabloid catnip relationship are still very much with her. In an interview with HELLO! magazine about her upcoming three-part Netflix documentary series, Kylie, which premieres on Wednesday (May 20), Minogue opened up about the former couple’s whirlwind romance.

According to the mag, in the doc, Minogue returns to her native Australia after living in the U.K. for almost 30 years, and sifts through a friend’s box of memorabilia, revealing some never-before-seen photos and video. The reminiscence sparks thoughts of Hutchence, who died by suicide in a Sydney hotel room in Nov. 1997.

Minogue and Hutchence dated from 1989 to 1991 and drew major attention at a time when INXS were still one of the world’s most beloved pop bands and Kylie was transitioning from her massive fame in Australia playing Charlene Robinson on the soap opera Neighbours to an about-to-pop music career.

“That was the first time I cried on camera in the interviews,” she told HELLO! of talking about Hutchence in the series. “I was like ‘uh oh, uh oh, uh oh’, I knew it was gonna happen and here it comes. I didn’t think it would be about that conversation. But when I really think about him and talk about him, I can often just feel his presence and think about that time.”

In speaking about Hutchence, Minogue said she was really trying to put herself “back in the moment, so I would become more emotional, which was interesting. I think it was good. I think maybe it’s just something that people can relate to.” The doc pulls back the curtain on their relationship, and the magazine said it reveals that Hutchence ushered Minogue into a “decadent, rock ‘n’ roll lifestyle and of self-discovery” that helped her switch her image from innocent soap actress to “pixie-cropped pop diva.”

Their breakup left Minogue “devastated” and in what is described as one of the most emotional segments of the doc she says, “It was definitely an amazing point in time and I’ve probably been looking for something like that ever since — and I haven’t got it.” And while the couple were regularly pegged as unabashed hedonists during their time together, Minogue chose to keep the more specific details of their time together to herself and let the mystery speak for itself.

“I am not a kind of ‘here it all is …’, I don’t think I’ll ever be that person,” she said. “And I think for one’s own sanity, you need to keep [the mystery].”

Minogue is joined by her extended family in the series for the first time, including sister singer Dannii, as well as mother Carol, Father Ronald and camera-shy brother Brendan. She also opens up about her big pop comeback in 2002 and her breast cancer battle three years later at age 36, when she had to cancel her tour and a Glastonbury Festival slot to undergo surgery and chemotherapy. The project was directed by Emmy- and BAFTA Award-winner Michael Harte (Three Identical StrangersBECKHAM) and produced by John Battsek’s Ventureland (WHAM!The Deepest Breath).
