MCU’s Last Release Before Avengers: Doomsday is One Week Away

While the buildup to Avengers: Infinity War was meticulous and strategic, the buildup to Avengers: Doomsday has felt somewhat hurried. Until a couple of years ago, the Marvel Cinematic Universe was progressing toward a film titled Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, which was ultimately abandoned when it became evident that the Kang storyline lacked audience interest (and Kang’s actor faced legal issues).

The groundwork for Doomsday has been limited to a few post-credit scenes. We witnessed the Fantastic Four’s ship appearing in the Thunderbolts’ orbit, followed by Doctor Doom approaching Franklin Richards. Recently, additional setup for Doomsday has been crammed into a profit-driven re-release of Avengers: Endgame. The Avengers: Endgame Encore featured multiple credit scenes: Bruce Banner in a holding cell; Loki recruiting Steve Rogers; Doom forging his mask; and something involving the TVA.

Even Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Marvel’s most significant film since Endgame, barely touched on Doomsday. The film concluded with an enigmatic hint regarding Spidey’s fate in the upcoming Avengers saga, and that was all. Next week, Marvel Studios is set to release the final MCU project before Doomsday: a new series titled VisionQuest.

VisionQuest’s Release Schedule Explained

Starring Paul Bettany as a human embodiment of Vision and James Spader as a human embodiment of Ultron, VisionQuest is the third and final chapter in the trilogy of shows that began with WandaVision and continued with Agatha All Along. While WandaVision was a fantasy sitcom and Agatha All Along was a musical horror homage, VisionQuest presents an unconventional sci-fi buddy story featuring all of Tony Stark’s A.I. creations interacting within Vision’s mind palace.

VisionQuest will premiere its first two episodes on Disney+ on October 14, followed by weekly releases of the next six episodes until November 25, when the finale airs. The narrative will follow Vision as he seeks to understand his identity through interactions with Tony’s other A.I. personas, including the formidable Ultron, while also teaming up with a mysterious teenager who may be his reincarnated son.

VisionQuest Is Marvel’s Last Chance For Doomsday Setup

VisionQuest represents Marvel Studios’ final opportunity to establish connections for Avengers: Doomsday. After this series, it will be up to the film itself to clarify its narrative when it premieres on December 18 (December 16 in the UK). Currently, it appears that we have all necessary components in place: Doom is annihilating universes, Loki is stepping in as God of Stories, Steve and Thor are returning, the Fox X-Men are involved, the Hulk has a role somehow, and the Fantastic Four are arriving on Earth-616.

If there are any remaining details we need to know before Avengers: Doomsday, such as character reveals or story setups, then VisionQuest is Marvel’s last chance to provide them. However, it seems that VisionQuest is largely disconnected from the characters and narratives associated with Doomsday, making substantial setup within the show unlikely.

The likelihood is higher that VisionQuest is laying groundwork for projects like Young Avengers and/or Champions that the MCU is gradually developing. After WandaVision introduced Billy and Tommy Maximoff as creations of Wanda’s grief-fueled imagination, and with Agatha All Along‘s transformation of Billy into a rich character, it seems that VisionQuest aims to do something similar for Tommy. By the conclusion of this trilogy from WandaVision, both Maximoff boys should be prepared to join Kamala Khan, Kate Bishop, and Cassie Lang in the Young Avengers team.

<em>VisionQuest‘s two-episode premiere will be available on Disney+ starting October 14. Following this release, momentum will build towards Avengers: Doomsday.
