Met Gala 2025: Meaning Behind Lauren Sánchez Bezos’ Madame X Dress

Lauren Sánchez Bezos’ Met Gala Dress Responds to “Strong Public Reaction” Regarding Fashion Controversy

Lauren Sánchez Bezos made a statement with her tribute to a scandal.

In celebration of the 2026 Met Gala’s “Fashion Is Art” theme, the former journalist collaborated with Schiaparelli designer Daniel Roseberry on a look inspired by John Singer Sargent’s infamous 1883 painting “Madame X.” This portrait shocked audiences at the time due to its portrayal of socialite Madame Pierre Gautreau with her jeweled strap slipping off her shoulder—so much so that Sargent had to repaint it with the strap in place.

It was precisely this detail that captivated Sánchez Bezos, who shared with Vogue that she was inspired by the painting after discovering “particularly how a small detail, like the fallen jeweled strap, once ignited such a strong public response.”

“When you stand in front of it now, you see a beautiful woman. For me, the image symbolizes how fashion and cultural standards can evolve over time,” the 56-year-old added. “Today, a strap is simply a strap, but when ‘Madame X’ was painted by Sargent, it was considered scandalous.”
