Some fights leave even the bitterest of rivalries at a painful stalemate, or even worse, a one-sided disaster. But not all fights that cause budding resentment and pending status quo changes are quite as felt as Naruto's team battles. It’s easy to fixate on the early days of Konoha’s Team 7, their discord and mismatched disdain getting in the way of good teamwork. But the pivotal fight that changed their dynamic forever, and essentially for the worse until their reunion in the Fourth Great Ninja War, was not the Valley of the End fight which ended in Sasuke Uchiha’s defection, but rather, the seeds of self-doubt and division planted in the Forest of Death.

The Chunin Exams changed Naruto in plenty of ways, particularly for the manga, simply by incorporating other young shinobi of Naruto Uzumaki’s age in meaningful and exciting ways. Suddenly, Masashi Kishimoto got to include specialists in the classic ninja disciplines across ninjutsu, genjutsu, taijutsu, and more. But the moment Orochimaru managed to infiltrate and make contact with Team 7 in the Forest of Death, the entire future of the series changed in tangible ways. Starting with Naruto chapter 49, Sasuke got his first real taste of power not handed down to him genetically or trained to him traditionally, while Naruto’s potential awakened, and their mutual exhaustion against a foe out of their league prompted other major changes as well.

The Most Pivotal Fight in Naruto Part 1 Set Everything Else In Motion

There was no conceivable way in which Naruto or Sasuke could be a match for Orochimaru, who at that point had only let the mask slip after murdering and disguising himself as a Kusagakure ninja. But they put in a valiant effort, with Sasuke even managing to set the Sannin ablaze, but everything took a turn for the worse once Orochimaru placed a Cursed Seal of Heaven on Sasuke. The ensuing exhaustion would prompt Sakura’s resolve not to fall behind her teammates, who were each showing rapid improvement. Sasuke would soon get a power-up that’d bolster his fighting ability at a steep price. Even Naruto, who’d previously unknowingly let out his Nine-Tails chakra once more, was showing innate control over his immense reserves.

From here, Sasuke began to see Naruto even more as a rival who’d potentially outdo even a talented Uchiha such as himself, embittering their relationship gradually from there. Unleashing the Curse Seal would also unveil Sasuke’s cruel side he’d not kick for multiple years. It also prompted a continuous link between him and Orochimaru, with the Sannin also taking the opportunity to seal Naruto’s Nine-Tails chakra temporarily. So much of this comes directly into play from Naruto gradually harnessing power from, taming, and ultimately befriending Kurama as the source of his power while Sasuke takes his own approach to severing Orochimaru’s hold over him.

But these developments are crucial to sparking the resentment that’d begun to fester within Sasuke and came to a head with their Rasengan vs. Chidori clash before the final battle of Part 1 at the Valley of the End. It motivates the emotional arc of Naruto’s primary characters, with threats like the Akatsuki and the Fourth Great Ninja War certainly raising the stakes but not being quite the same as far as driving forces go.

Upcoming Naruto Anime Projects Can Create New Iconic Moments

Naruto’s future has been eagerly teased by the official website, Shueisha, and VIZ Media with an array of hints about either a limited series or film release. With the previously-promised four new episodes indicated to take place in the pre-Shippuden era, it could be a well-deserved glimpse back into the life of Team 7 before fractured ties began strengthening their bond with viewers. This seems like as fair a candidate as any to create entirely new and memorable experiences. But it’s hard to imagine that even with Pierrot’s new and stellar revised production philosophy that even the most gorgeously-created episodes will match the narrative legacy of that Chunin Exams moment.
