Is aluminum deodorant harmful to your health?
Here’s the good news for all you antiperspirant deodorant fans: there is no research to prove that aluminum causes cancer. It’s an internet myth that lacks real scientific support, according to Dr. Kwan.
“Aluminum and parabens have not been shown to cause cancer, particularly breast cancer,” he states. The American Cancer Society confirms there is no connection between aluminum-based antiperspirants or deodorants and cancer.
Is natural deodorant truly better? The answer is complex.
If you’re particularly concerned about odor and prefer products made with naturally-derived ingredients, a natural deodorant might suit you. Just be aware that it likely won’t reduce sweating. Dr. Kwan does recommend being cautious of potentially irritating natural ingredients, such as essential oils.
However, Dr. Kwan believes that aluminum deodorants are generally more effective as they address both odor and sweat. This is because they keep underarms dry, which prevents odor-causing bacteria, he explains.
Ultimately, Dr. Kwan concludes, “If someone wants to reduce sweating, an antiperspirant may be a better choice.”
