Nikki Sixx Peed on Rick Nielsen’s Raincoat Story

Fans of Motley Crue and Cheap Trick are recognized as dedicated collectors. However, Rick Nielsen is offering a unique opportunity to acquire something truly special.

In his upcoming auction, which includes many of his renowned and eclectic sweaters, numerous guitars, and even a checkered John Deere tractor worthy of Cheap Trick, the guitar legend is also providing one fortunate fan the chance to own his raincoat.

This is no ordinary raincoat — it’s the infamous one that Nikki Sixx, the bassist of Motley Crue, urinated on.

The exciting part is that by purchasing this coveted item, you will be supporting a worthy cause. Julien’s Auction is managing the sale of over 300 items on October 24 in Nashville, with a portion of the proceeds benefiting St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Why Did Nikki Sixx Pee on Rick Nielsen’s Raincoat?

This is an interesting question, and fortunately, he captured the moment in the band’s classic memoir, The Dirt.

It’s important to remember that this incident occurred many years ago, and Sixx has been sober for quite some time now.

The two bands performed together at the Hammersmith Odeon in London on Valentine’s Day in 1986 while Motley Crue was touring for the album Theatre of Pain. Cheap Trick had joined as the opening act for a series of dates, including the Hammersmith show.

This was a challenging time for the bassist, who described himself as a “vengeful, self-hating junkie,” and he recounted how a dramatic series of events after the show led to a heroin overdose.

‘I Kept Telling Him I Wanted to Piss on It.’

Despite it being a potential wake-up call, it wasn’t for Sixx. A few days later, he was out socializing again. Nielsen wanted to introduce him to Roger Taylor of Queen. The drummer had invited members of both Cheap Trick and Motley Crue out for dinner at a beloved Russian restaurant known to be frequented by both Queen and the Rolling Stones.

“We gathered around a large antique wooden table and sampled every type of vodka shot imaginable—sweet, spicy, raspberry, garlic—before enjoying a traditional Russian dinner,” Sixx detailed in The Dirt. “Rick was wearing a black rubber jacket, and for some reason, I kept insisting that I wanted to urinate on it.”

Dessert arrived with silver platters for each guest, featuring seven lines of cocaine. It’s safe to say everyone in attendance was feeling quite good. Perhaps even a bit too good.

‘I Had Just Pissed on My Hero’

The group eventually returned to the hotel bar where things took an unexpected turn.

“Roger Taylor was conversing with Rick Nielsen while I sat on a stool behind them. I knelt on the stool, pulled down my leather pants, and fulfilled my promise from earlier: I urinated on Rick’s jacket,” recalled the bassist. “He didn’t even notice until it began dripping down his pants and onto the floor. At that moment, I thought it was hilarious, but when I returned to my room afterwards, I felt awful: I had just urinated on my hero.”

Rick Nielsen’s Reaction: ‘It Was Euro-pee-in’

Years later, in a 2021 interview, the guitarist reflected on the incident with amusement.

“It was Euro-pee-in’,” he joked while laughing and strumming his guitar. “Yeah, it’s true. I had this jacket or coat that was rubberized. It was around the time when all the punks were doing it.”

“I liked this coat because it resembled a Gestapo coat and I had a rubber belt with a Norton motorcycle insignia,” he explained. “It was just…it was terrible. It wasn’t me at all, but it was so disgusting yet I owned it. So there I was at the bar while he was urinating. Luckily it was a rubber coat because you’re urinating on my coat’s back.”

Why Rick is Selling the Raincoat, Guitars, Sweaters and More

The 77-year-old guitar legend stated that it was his wife’s suggestion to reduce his collection to something more manageable. “I always told people that when I die, my wife would probably sell everything for a dollar, so they should stick around,” he joked. “But then I ended up living longer than she expected.”

He began collecting guitars because “cars were too expensive,” as he mentioned in a video announcing the sale. The 70 guitars being sold are just a small portion of his overall collection; he claims to have once owned over 2,000 different instruments and now aims to downsize to about 600.
