Starting today, Giamatti’s 2023 movie The Holdovers is officially available to stream on Peacock. The Billions star plays Paul Hunham, a strict teacher at an all-male boarding school where he unexpectedly bonds with a troubled student and a grieving cook during the holidays. The movie also starred Da’Vine Joy Randolph (Only Murders in the Building) as Mary, Dominic Sessa (Now You See Me: Now You Don’t) as Angus Tully, Carrie Preston (True Blood) as Lydia Crane, Gillian Vigman (The Hangover) as Judy, Tate Donovan (Argo) as Stanley, Michael Provost (Insatiable) as Jason Smith, and Brady Hepner (The Black Phone) as Teddy Kountze.
“It follows a curmudgeonly instructor at a New England prep school who is forced to remain on campus during Christmas break to babysit the handful of students with nowhere to go,” reads the synopsis. “Eventually, he forms an unlikely bond with one of them: a damaged, brainy troublemaker and with the school’s head cook, who has just lost a son in Vietnam.”
The Holdovers was directed by Academy Award winner Alexander Payne, with David Hemingson writing the screenplay. This was Payne’s directorial comeback after six years since the 2017 sci-fi dramedy Downsizing. The film was executive-produced by Andrew Golov, Thom Zadra, and Chris Stinson, with Mark Johnson, Bill Block, and Hemingson serving as producers. It was nominated for five Academy Awards, with Randolph winning Best Supporting Actress.
