Soundgarden guitarist Kim Thayil stated that the band’s final album, which includes recordings of the late singer Chris Cornell, is expected to be released in 2027.
He mentioned that work on the project, which began several years ago, is ongoing, and he did not dismiss the possibility of touring to promote the album.
In a recent interview with Ultimate Guitar, Thayil acknowledged the challenges the band faced while working with the material left by Cornell after his death in 2017, as they are committed to ensuring everything is done correctly.

“There are at least two songs for which I wrote the music,” Thayil shared. “One of them, I also wrote the lyrics for… [O]one of the collaborations involved me submitting music to Chris, and he wrote lyrics for them.
“[H]We would adjust the verse and chorus lengths and sequences to fit his lyrics. However, they also had to align with the dynamics of the instrumental. Sometimes, lengths will extend to accommodate guitar solos.”
When asked about how many songs would be included on the record, he initially said he couldn’t provide a specific answer but added: “Part of that is still a work in progress. We’re evaluating the material we plan to complete, and we also consider material that we might be able to finish…”
“[T]These decisions will need to be made between Matt [Cameron] and Ben [Shepherd] and me, along with the producer. Currently, it’s likely around eight or nine songs. More likely nine.”
Thayil reported that work is being done around the band members’ other commitments, which is why they are “aiming for next year” as a tentative release date.
What Kim Thayil Thinks of Final Soundgarden Album’s Significance
“We have to schedule studio time when we can,” he explained. “It’s been a very busy year for us with the Hall of Fame induction, and it was a busy year for me with my book; until last year, Matt was very occupied with Pearl Jam recordings and touring… we have to navigate around all of that.”
When asked about the possibility of Soundgarden touring with a guest vocalist or multiple vocalists, Thayil replied: “That would be discussed generally, like, ‘Well, what do we do? How do we promote it?’
“We cherish these songs… These ideas were created by Matt, Ben, myself, and Chris. These songs have been developed collaboratively among all four of us in various combinations over the years.”
He reflected that interest in the album is “probably heightened” by its context, adding: “[W]We understand the significance of this material concerning our legacy and Chris’ legacy… we want to ensure it’s as exceptional as possible since it will be our last studio album.”
