Until Dawn 2 is the beginning of a brand-new era for the franchise in many ways. For instance, announced at Sony’s June 2026 PlayStation State of Play, the cinematic, choice-driven sequel will be developed by Firesprite, not Supermassive, and looks quite different in tone than the original.
Supermassive would instead go on to develop plenty of these kinds of QTE-heavy games like The Quarry or any of the installments in the Dark Pictures anthology series, complete with branching narratives and the potential for many playable characters to die based on split-second decisions that players make. Until Dawn 2 just reared its head again, though, and this new trailer is no less cinematic or packed with A-list acting talent.
During today’s September 2026 PlayStation State of Play, Firesprite’s Until Dawn 2 received a new trailer depicting more characters who hadn’t appeared in the reveal trailer, including a character played by none other than Stranger Things’ Dacre Montgomery. Likewise, it’s clear from the trailer that the story revolves around the horrors that transpire when a group participates in a televised ritualistic sacrifice, where players can apparently choose to either sacrifice a chicken or slash the playable protagonist’s palm instead.
Because Until Dawn is easily one of the more successful and popular games of its ilk, Until Dawn 2 has fairly high expectations. While Supermassive’s Dark Pictures games are numerous and share an overarching continuity with a shared narrator, Until Dawn is unmatched in its singular achievements, and it’ll be neat to see how Until Dawn 2 compares when it releases on January 28, 2027.
