For better or for worse, the world can’t stop talking about Sydney Sweeney. Thanks to a hugely controversial third season of Euphoria, with plenty of criticism thrown the way of creator Sam Levinson, Sweeney is dominating social media headlines, something the 28-year-old is more than used to in 2026. Alongside Zendaya, Hunter Schafer, Jacob Elordi, Alexa Demie, and more, the cast of Euphoria has been so busy since the last installment that it is starting to feel like they have outgrown this once boundary-breaking HBO series.
Sweeney, in particular, has been very busy in the past twelve months, earning acclaim for her lead role in her boxing biopic, Christy, and finding huge box office success starring in an adaptation of The Housemaid, the bestselling novel by Freida McFadden. Against a reported budget of just $35 million, Paul Feig‘s indulgent thriller, which also stars Amanda Seyfried and Brandon Sklenar, earned just shy of $400 million at the global box office. On top of a confirmed movie sequel, it has now been reported that this burgeoning twisty franchise is expanding into other mediums.
It has now been confirmed that Lionsgate is taking The Housemaid to the stage, courtesy of producers Melting Pot, led by Simon Friend and Hanna Osmolska, and playwright Bekah Brunstetter. Lionsgate’s president of global products and experiences, Jenefer Brown, said of the new venture: “The Housemaid has all the elements for a successful stage adaptation – a blockbuster title, compelling characters, and a story full of twists and turns that builds tension and momentum in a way that naturally lends itself to the stage.” She continued, “This project reflects how our hit films and IP can be transformed into novel experiences.” This is the latest in an exciting slate of screen-to-stage projects for Lionsgate, which also includes upcoming stage adaptations of Dirty Dancing, La La Land, and Wonder.
A Sequel to ‘The Housemaid’ is in Development
Given the adaptation’s huge box office success, it isn’t a surprise that a sequel has officially been greenlit. TitledThe Housemaid’s Secret, once again based on McFadden’s bestseller, the sequel will see Sweeney’s Millie return as a housekeeper, ready to uncover more strange, twisted secrets inside the house of a woman she’s never allowed to meet. Feig will return to the director’s chair for the sequel, which has also cast the ever-brilliantKirsten Dunst as Wendy. The film is slated for a global theatrical release onDecember 17, 2027.
The Housemaid is available to stream on Starz now. Make sure to stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
