A week into its theatrical run, the DC Universe’s second installment, Supergirl, is lagging behind some of the biggest superhero bombs of recent times. Supergirl opened to mixed reviews last week, and underperformed in its box-office debut. The film grossed just $37 million in its first three days of release in domestic theaters, against a reported budget of more than $170 million. Directed by Craig Gillespie, the film didn’t fare much better overseas either, grossing just $30 million in its first weekend. A recent report suggested that Gillespie clashed with studio bosses James Gunn and Peter Safran over the movie’s final cut, which continued to test poorly for months on end despite tinkering from both sides.
Starring Milly Alcock, Supergirl now holds a 55% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, where the consensus reads, “Milly Alcock brings a swagger to Kara Zor-El that’d make Krypton proud in this otherwise familiar origin story, dawning a promising new hero in the DCU who’s still waiting for an adventure that matches her vigor.” This is far lower than the “Certified Fresh” 85% score of the franchise’s inaugural installment, Superman, directed by Gunn. That movie made $220 million worldwide in its opening weekend and finished its run with nearly $620 million.

Here’s How Much ‘Supergirl’ Has Grossed So Far
Prior to its release, Supergirl was attacked by toxic fans for the casting of Alcock. Following its lackluster box-office performance, the same fans have also predicted the genre’s decline. Things certainly are dour; Supergirl has grossed only $48 million in one week of release domestically. By comparison, the DC Extended Universe dud, The Flash, made $55 million in its opening weekend alone. Joker: Folie à Deux, the critically panned sequel to Joker, starring Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga, grossed $44 million in one week and ended its run with under $60 million. The DC Universe has no connection with those films, aside from the fact that they’re also based on DC characters. The DCU will continue with the upcoming body horror film Clayface, and with Gunn’s Superman follow-up Man of Tomorrow. Stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
