Police Reveal What Happened After Gunfire Erupted In Tucson

According to the Tucson Police Department, officers patrolling downtown heard gunshots around 2 a.m. Sunday near the 100 block of Congress Street, an area filled with restaurants and nightlife. When officers arrived, they spotted a man running from the scene and repeatedly ordered him to stop. Authorities say an officer ultimately shot the suspect, who was taken into custody and transported to a hospital with serious injuries.

Nine People Injured As Multiple Investigations Get Underway

Police say the suspect allegedly opened fire before officers intervened, leaving nine people with gunshot wounds. Officials said the victims primarily suffered injuries to their extremities and were treated at the scene before being transported to nearby hospitals. No deaths have been reported, and authorities confirmed no officers were injured during the incident.

As investigators continued piecing together the events, officials temporarily shut down parts of downtown Tucson, including sections of Congress Street and nearby roads, while crime scene investigators processed the area. Authorities have not publicly identified the suspect, and the Pima Regional Critical Incident Team is leading the investigation into the officer-involved shooting while the Tucson Police Department conducts its own internal review.

Mayor Speaks Out After Downtown Tucson Shooting

City leaders also addressed the shooting, with Tucson Mayor Regina Romero calling it a reckless act of gun violence that impacted not only the victims but the entire community. Meanwhile, investigators are asking anyone with information or video from the incident to contact authorities as the investigation remains ongoing. In a statement, she shared:

“Last night, Tucson experienced another serious and senseless act of gun violence. A shooter recklessly began shooting in a crowded area striking nine people before being stopped by a Tucson Police Officer. Thanks to the quick actions and excellent care provided by our fire fighters and police officers, all victims were stabilized and taken to the hospital where we are hopeful they will all recover,” Mayor Romero said.
