The Legend of Zelda has been through plenty of iterations over the years, but few are as universally beloved as the realistic, dark fantasy that Twilight Princess rooted itself within. For years before, fans had been calling for the series to turn towards more naturalistic graphics, particularly after the cel-shaded Wind Waker originally went down very poorly in terms of art style.
Twilight Princess was absolutely the culmination of those demands coming to fruition, and it’s still aesthetically one of the coolest games in the series, even all these years later. That said, there’s plenty of room for improvements, and dedicated fans have been making spectacular strides in bringing the game forward into 2026 and beyond.
In case you haven’t been following along, there are some very clever people out there who have worked day in and day out to decompile the original code from the 2006 GameCube release. That essentially transforms it into a readable format to get the game running natively on PC, while at the same time opening the door for modders to make our wildest Zelda dreams come true.
That progress is most starkly demonstrated by the 4k texture pack for the game, created by Henriko Magnifico. It is available to download for free from his website, and while it isn’t quite finished just yet, the game looks absolutely stunning when it’s turned on. Over on YouTube, the user Video Game Esoterica uploaded a comparison between that and the HD Texture Pack Wii U version of the game, and the comments were filled with fans blown away by the progress on both.
“Hey Henriko, if you happen to see this, know that you’re doing an amazing job! Your HD 4K texture packs have brought some great Nintendo classics back to life. Keep it up and never stop,” one comment read.
“Using Wii U texture pack all the way! Hoping for some normal/bump maps and RT Global Illumination (and maybe AO, reflections, shadows later if possible). This team cooked!” another said.
While a third added, “The Wii U texture pack is great, Henricko did such a good job though with all the post processing too on Dolphin!”
Whichever you do happen to prefer, Twilight Princess looks absolutely spectacular in both versions of the game that are being produced for PC, particularly given that both are still under development. Beyond that, we just have to hope that Nintendo pulls through on the Ocarina of Time remake and we’ll all be having a great time for a while to come yet.
