Underrated Rave Movie Delivers a Fun Experience

After being overlooked for a Blu-ray release, Greg Harrison’s Groove is now available in high definition with the new Groove 4K release. The 2000 film offers an intriguing glimpse into the San Francisco underground rave scene and has aged well over the past 25 years. With an excellent soundtrack and a variety of valuable special features, it’s a release worth exploring.

“You are invited to the hottest party of the year. Groove is the hip, hilarious hit of the 2000 Sundance Film Festival that has audiences and critics raving from coast to coast. As the sun sets on Saturday night, rave kids Colin and Harmony take their relationship to the next level, veteran clubgoer Leyla searches online for a ride to the rave, and workaholic David just wants to make it home safely. By sunrise, romances ignite, hearts break, and lives change forever,” states the official description.

Filmed impressively in just over two weeks, Groove is a lively hangout movie that weaves through various characters at an all-night rave. While none of the narratives are particularly profound, they are all enjoyable to watch, featuring notable actors like Hamish Linklater, Lola Gladuini, and Nick Offerman. The film has a distinct style, and its brisk 86-minute runtime works to its advantage.

The Groove 4K release looks and sounds exceptional. The HDR implementation enhances the rave scenes beautifully, while its DTS-HD 5.1 audio mix allows the bass to truly resonate. This release marks a significant upgrade from the previous DVD version, making it an obvious choice for fans.

Although none of the bonus features for Groove 4K are new, there is a substantial amount to explore. The most substantial feature is the commentary track with Harrison, producer Danielle Renfrew, and DP Matt Irving, which is both informative and entertaining as they share engaging stories from filming alongside their creative decisions. The set also includes six minutes of extended and deleted scenes, another six minutes of behind-the-scenes footage, a camera test for the slow-motion segment, several casting auditions, and a music video for “Heaven Scent” by Bedrock.

Groove 4K Review: Final Verdict

The Groove 4K is another impressive transfer from Sony. Whether you’re revisiting Harrison’s rave movie or watching it for the first time, it serves as an entertaining time capsule with an energetic soundtrack. Fans will not be disappointed with this release.
