Critically acclaimed director Park Chan-wook is preparing his next film, which will feature a star-studded cast.
What do we know about Matthew McConaughey’s next movie?
According to a new report from Deadline, Park Chan-wook’s new film, The Brigands of Rattlecreek, is assembling an impressive cast. Deadline notes that Matthew McConaughey, Austin Butler, Pedro Pascal, and Chinese star Tang Wei (who previously appeared in Park’s Decision to Leave) have all joined the project.
The movie, directed by Park, will come from an original screenplay by S. Craig Zahler (Bone Tomahawk). Deadline’s report states that the film is a Western thriller. It will follow the story of “a sheriff and a doctor who seek revenge against a group of bandits who use the cover of a torrential thunderstorm to rob and terrorize the occupants of a small town.”
Much like Park’s other films, Deadline notes that this movie will explore themes of revenge, retribution, memory, family, and more. For Park, this marks the culmination of a decades-long desire to create this film. The project first emerged almost 20 years ago, with the script originally making the Black List at some point. Park had been trying to bring it to life for some time and has finally assembled the cast to do so.
The movie is set to be on sale at the upcoming Cannes Film Festival, where Park was also announced as the President of the festival’s jury this year. Park’s previous film, No Other Choice, received critical acclaim but earned no Oscar nominations, with many calling it one of the biggest snubs of the year.
McConaughey’s latest role came in 2025’s The Lost Bus, while Butler was last seen in 2025’s Caught Stealing. Pedro Pascal will next appear in the upcoming The Mandalorian & Grogu and Avengers: Doomsday, while Tang Wei last starred in 2024’s Wonderland.
