Marvel is making a concerted effort to reclaim its position in the cinematic landscape with the highly anticipated Thunderbolts*. However, industry analysts predict that its opening weekend performance may fall short compared to the studio’s previous blockbuster successes. These projections suggest a cautious outlook for this latest addition to the Marvel franchise, reflecting the evolving dynamics of audience preferences and box office trends.

A Minecraft Movie has taken the box office by storm, surprising many industry analysts who had underestimated its potential. The film, which features beloved characters and clever references, including the humorous chicken jockey, has propelled the collaboration between Jack Black and Jason Momoa to a remarkable opening, surpassing even the impressive debut of Barbie directed by Greta Gerwig. With a staggering $163 million in earnings across the U.S. and Canada, this Warner Bros. production is set to pave the way for another upcoming film, Sinners, which sees Michael B. Jordan teaming up with Ryan Coogler. However, the question remains: can Sinners reach the heights achieved by A Minecraft Movie?
Once a powerhouse in the film industry, Marvel has faced challenges in recent years, with the exception of the successful Deadpool & Wolverine, which reignited some of its former glory. Yet, the upcoming release of Thunderbolts* presents another opportunity for Marvel to gauge its current appeal. According to The Hollywood Reporter, analysts are not expecting a blockbuster opening akin to Minecraft, but they are estimating an opening weekend gross in the range of $63 million to $77 million, with a target of approximately $70 million.
This latest installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) features a unique ensemble reminiscent of the Avengers, bringing together various characters from previous films for a collaborative effort. However, unlike the original Avengers, the characters in Thunderbolts* are primarily anti-heroes, which may influence audience reception. The film’s direction is in the hands of Jake Schreier, known for his work on the critically acclaimed Netflix series Beef and the 2012 film Robot & Frank, adding an intriguing layer of creative vision to this project.
Florence Pugh, who made her Marvel debut in Black Widow, describes Thunderbolts* as possessing a bold and spirited attitude. She remarked, “It ended up becoming this quite badass indie, A24-feeling assassin movie with Marvel superheroes,” in an interview with Empire. Additionally, Schreier indicated that the studio encouraged him to infuse “something different” into the film. He elaborated, “There’s a certain amount of that Beef tone in it, that does feel different. There’s an emotional darkness that we brought to this that is resonant but doesn’t come at the expense of comedy.”
