Review: Armageddon and Deep Impact. Saving Private Ryan and The Thin Red Line. Dante’s Peak and Volcano. The First Omen and Immaculate. Every now and then, we get a case of twin films that are so similar it is eerie. It happens on television too as with 2022’s Candy and 2023’s Love & Death which both looked at the Candy Montgomery murders. Now, we have two mediums blending together with the new series American Hostage chronicling the exact same story as Gus Vant Sant’s 2025 film Dead Man’s Wire. Both stories chronicle the story of Tony Kiritsis, an Indianapolis man who took his mortgage broker hostage in a highly publicized three-day crisis broadcast across the nation. While Van Sant’s film centered on Kiritsis and kept the focus on the hostage-taking itself, Shawn Ryan and Eileen Myers’ American Hostage shifts to radio reporter Fred Heckman and the overarching conspiracy that led to the shocking crime itself. With more time to explore the story, American Hostage is an interesting look at one of the strangest crimes ever committed, but does not necessarily improve upon what we have already seen in Dead Man’s Wire.

Reprising the role he played in the 2022 podcast of the same name, Jon Hamm stars in American Hostage as Fred Heckman, a beloved reporter poised to move from Indianapolis to a national news broadcast. With the support of his wife, Barbara (Mireille Enos), Fred is preparing to leave Indiana for his big career opportunity when local businessman Tony Kiritsis (Giovani Ribisi) takes mortgage broker Richard Hall (Kristoffer Polaha) hostage using a shotgun with a wire tied around the trigger to the other end wrapped around Hall’s neck. Calling the police to decry his belief that Hall and his father were orchestrating a scam to steal real estate from him, Kiritsis demands a live interview with Heckman broadcast on the radio. As the police, led by Chief Gallagher (Mark McKinney), begin to orchestrate a plan to take down Kiritsis, the larger machinations of M.L. Hall (Steven Ratzlaff) and attorney John Ruckelshaus (Alan Arkin) begin to come to light as Fred Heckman senses that Tony may not be crazy in his theories. Things get more complicated when Cormac McNally (Jonathan Tucker) enters the frame and plans to potentially kill Tony take shape.

Where Dead Man’s Wire was anchored by Bill Skarsgard’s manic performance as Tony, Giovani Ribisi brings a more charming and down-to-earth take on the hostage-taker that makes you question the level of his sanity but never to the point of thinking he is completely insane. The film version featured Colman Domingo as radio DJ Fred Temple who was more of a supporting player whereas Jon Hamm is the main character in American Hostage. Hamm plays Heckman as a classic newsman in the vein of Walter Cronkite. Heckman is a journalist and wants to find the meat of the story rather than sensationalize it and his observations both directly with Tony Kiritsis as well as seeing what law enforcement is planning gives him various angles from which to draw conclusions as to who is truly guilty and who is innocent. He is supported by Mireille Enos in a small role as his wife, Barbara, as well as William Jackson Harper as reporter Ben Hairston. Harper is a great balance to Hamm with both playing different generations of reporters, both of whom want to find the truth and share camaraderie in the pursuit of it.

The original podcast that inspired American Hostage ran for eight episodes and featured Hamm performing through radio broadcasts, phone recordings, and legal proceedings, many of which are replicated in the screen version. The visual medium allows for the 1970s fashion to give the series a flair that does not always translate from audio only, but this series does a great job of digging into the media frenzy that surrounded Tony Kiritsis and his hostage standoff. The amount of media attention it garnered could have been a detractor for this dramatization, but the behind-the-scenes elements of the story, which differ from Dead Man’s Wire, allow for a lot of tension mixed with some genuinely funny moments throughout. The highlight of the series is Jon Hamm delivering yet another leading role set in American history that is likable, watchable, and fascinating.

Adapted by Shawn Ryan and Eileen Myers, American Hostage is designed to be the first season of an ongoing anthology with each narrative looking at a distinct hostage situation. Eileen Myers brings experience with mature dramas like Hung and Big Love while Ryan is best known for creating police procedurals like The Shield, The Unit, as well as hit Netflix series The Night Agent. Directing duties are split between Alan Arkin, pulling double duty behind the camera and in front of it, as well as Nina Lopez Corrado. Arkin and Ryan reunite after working together on The Night Agent.. Nina Lopez-Corrado also worked on The Night Agent , as well as Perry Mason, The Last of Us, and House of the Dragon.. The creative team and talent on screen do a solid job of bringing this story together and digging into facets that were left unexplored in Gus Van Sant’s film, but I am still left wondering if they are even needed.

American Hostage is a good series but not one that feels necessary coming on the heels of both the podcast and Dead Man’s Wire.. Gus Van Sant’s film boasted Bill Skarsgard, Cary Elwes, Al Pacino, Colman Domingo, and Dacre Montgomery while American Hostage does not have much significant name recognition past Jon Hamm and Giovanni Ribisi. While A-list names don’t make or break project quality, they can enhance long-form viewing experiences. American Hostage leans more into darkly comedic elements of this bizarre story which sometimes leaves tone feeling uneven but it is not enough to tank this series at all. This is an intriguing exploration of Tony Kiritsis’ story from a different angle that left me with many questions about how law enforcement handled this case and its judicial system. While I still prefer Dead Man’s Wire, American Hostage is a decent debut volume in what could be an exciting new anthology.
