Borg Redesign Unveiled for Star Trek’s 60th Anniversary

The Star Trek franchise is full of memorable and interesting alien races, all of whom have a different role to play in a narrative that has been going on for sixty years at this point. Among them, the Borg are easily some of the most iconic that we have seen to date, with their cybernetic design and evil machinations defining many of the different series as dangerous antagonists.

Add to that impressive iconography, like the cube-shaped spaceships they travel around in, and the Borg quickly become some of the most memorable and impressive creations in any sci-fi franchise. Now, they are about to arrive once again in a major Star Trek release, but this one looks very different from anything that even the most dedicated fans will have seen before.

As first reported by CBR, the Borg are set to feature on some of the cards in the upcoming official Magic: The Gathering set that celebrates sixty years of the franchise. The set is debuting next month on November 13, and we have now seen many of the cards that are set to be included as part of it.

One of those cards is Overflow Submatrix, a Black Artifact Creature that features a Borg character bursting onto the Bridge of a Starfleet ship. Interestingly, and hilariously depending on who you ask, this particular Borg has an adorably little cat’s head, which undercuts the terrifying nature of the rest of the cybernetic Borg husk it’s attached to.

As many of you will know, the Borg are linked together by a telepathic, shared neural hive mind, with each member essentially acting as a single cell within a massive organism. As you might expect, most civilizations in space aren’t queuing up to sign up for the great Borg entity, so they need to add to their numbers in other ways.

The main way this happens is via forced assimilation, with the Borg forcibly absorbing other sentient species into their hive. That likely means that this sweet cat is either from a planet of similar feline species that was unable to defend themselves from the Borg or a simple house pet caught up in the politics of the Star Trek universe.

Cats are obviously also quite a major feature in Magic: The Gathering as it currently stands, with all sorts of support cards and creatures which enable players to build decks dedicated to them. That said, this card doesn’t play into any of that, and it really is just the artwork rather than a mechanical feature of the card.

Outside of that, the Borg are set to play a major role in the upcoming Star Trek MTG set, with the “We Are The Borg” Commander deck set to feature White, Blue, and Black cards. That has a fun theme of capturing enemy creatures, which obviously plays into the existing lore of the race nicely.

There isn’t long to wait now to get in on the fun if you are planning to buy the Star Trek set, with the full release set to go ahead on November 13.
