True Detective Casting Completes Nicolas Cage’s Lovecraftian Trilogy

Nicolas Cage has portrayed numerous intriguing characters in films. His filmography is marked by its unpredictability, with the actor transitioning from one eccentric role to another. Particularly in recent years, Cage has showcased his remarkable range. Following his casting in True Detective season 5, he appears poised to further diversify his acting repertoire.

Since Nicolas Cage recently starred in Spider-Noir, True Detective seems to align perfectly with his current career trajectory. Interestingly, before Spider-Noir, the actor featured in a series of horror films, solidifying his status within the genre. While many horror enthusiasts recognize him for his role in Longlegs, he also led two remarkable Lovecraftian horror films.

Mandy and Color Out of Space are two indie yet exceptional cosmic horror films that are further enhanced by Nicolas Cage’s performance. The actor appears to thrive in both roles as the absurdities and chaos inherent in Lovecraftian narratives allow him to utilize his strengths as an actor. After Mandy and Color Out of Space, True Detective season 5 could mark his third Lovecraftian project.

Richard Stanley’s Color Out of Space is a quintessential cosmic horror film based on an H.P. Lovecraft story of the same name. In contrast, Panos Cosmatos’ Mandy incorporates elements of cosmic terror while narrating a linear tale of revenge. Although Mandy‘s plot categorizes it as a conventional horror action film, it visually and thematically suggests that something Lovecraftian and otherworldly is always at play.

Similar to Mandy, HBO’s True Detective does not overtly display its Lovecraftian elements. It unfolds more like a procedural crime thriller infused with tropical noir elements. However, beyond its detective narrative, True Detective subtly references Lovecraftian lore, particularly evident in season 1.

The Tuttle/Childress cult, referenced in both seasons 1 and 2 of True Detective, worships “The Yellow King” and conducts rituals associated with “Carcosa.” These names stem from Ambrose Bierce’s An Inhabitant of Carcosa and Robert W. Chambers’ The King in Yellow, which laid the groundwork for Lovecraft’s literary universe.

Matthew McConaughey is depicted as a quintessential Lovecraftian protagonist whose insatiable curiosity and quest for understanding the unknowable lead him to madness. He delivers pessimistic philosophical monologues that resonate with Lovecraftian dread. His iconic statement regarding human consciousness being a misstep in evolution reflects Lovecraft’s notion that humanity cannot escape cosmic insignificance:

“I think human consciousness is a tragic misstep in human evolution. We became too self aware; nature created an aspect of nature separate from itself. We are creatures that should not exist by natural law…”

Given Nicolas Cage’s background with Lovecraftian horror, he could serve as the ideal replacement for Matthew McConaughey in True Detective season 5.

True Detective season 1 was a remarkable achievement. It arguably presents the finest eight episodes of detective storytelling ever seen on television. Even after a decade since its release, it remains distinctive and impactful, with none of its subsequent seasons coming close to matching its acclaim and legacy.

Together with Nicolas Cage, Antonio Banderas has been cast as the co-lead in True Detective season 5.

While True Detective season 4 received better critical reviews and was more commercially successful, it remains the most contentious season among viewers. Season 4 also struggled to escape the shadow of season 1, attempting too hard to riff on its supernatural Lovecraftian elements without delivering solid resolutions.

Following season 4, season 5 must proceed cautiously but not entirely abandon the show’s unique blend of procedural drama and Lovecraftian horror. With Nicolas Cage among its leads, True Detective season 5 already holds a significant advantage. It is hoped that it will capitalize on Cage’s horror background and match or surpass the quality of season 1.
