Harry Bosch became one of modern television’s best-known detectives in Bosch, the Prime Video series that began in 2015. Played by Titus Welliver, Bosch is defined by gritty realism and an uncompromising moral code: “Everybody counts, or nobody counts.” The original series ran for seven seasons, followed by the 2022 continuation Bosch: Legacy, bringing Bosch’s pursuit of justice through Los Angeles to a new chapter.
Titus Welliver’s Bosch left the screen when Bosch: Legacy concluded after three seasons, while Maggie Q joined the franchise as Renee Ballard, a detective who investigates cold cases on behalf of victims. In the spin-off Ballard, the retired Harry Bosch sometimes returns to help. Bosch: Start of Watch offers a different look at the character: rather than continue the story of the veteran detective, the prequel explores his early years.
Prime Video announced that Bosch: Start of Watch rewinds the story to 1992 Los Angeles. Cameron Monaghan plays Harry, a 26-year-old rookie officer working in a city facing racial tension, gang violence and an overstretched LAPD. The official description says that routine calls and growing unrest lead Bosch into a high-profile heist and a web of corruption that will test his loyalty to the badge. Bosch: Start of Watch is announced to premiere on January 10, 2027.

The Case Is Assigned Your Detective Is…
A great detective is a personality paired with a method, which is why these four familiar types keep returning. Here is your match, what it suggests about you, and the case for each detective’s approach.
Peter Falk · Columbo · 1968 to 2003
Columbo
You let people underestimate you, then keep showing up. Columbo reveals the culprit in the first ten minutes, so the suspense comes from watching a wealthy suspect gradually realise the detective is closing in.
You are often underestimated, and you do not mind because it helps you.
The show made the inverted detective format a defining feature of television crime drama.
Peter Falk won four Emmys for the role and played Columbo across five decades.
Your weakness is that one more question can become many more questions.
Daniel Craig · Knives Out · 2019 to now
Benoit Blanc
You know how to use charm and performance to make an impression. Rian Johnson created Benoit Blanc as a gentleman detective who remains an outsider, a position that helps him draw out people who might not otherwise speak to him.
You read a room quickly and may use a little performance to move things along.
Rian Johnson received a Best Original Screenplay Oscar nomination for Knives Out in 2020.
Wake Up Dead Man arrived on Netflix in December, making three Blanc films in six years.
Your risk is enjoying the performance so much that others miss the point.
Angela Lansbury · Murder, She Wrote · 1984 to 1996
People tell you things because they trust you. Jessica Fletcher is a crime novelist from a small town in Maine whose warmth and apparent trustworthiness encourage suspects to confide in her.
You are the friend people call first, and you know a great deal about those around you.
Angela Lansbury received twelve Emmy nominations for the role and did not win.
The show ran for twelve seasons, and Jamie Lee Curtis is now bringing the character back.
Your weakness is that knowing everything helps only when you know what to do with it.
Raymond Chandler · The Big Sleep · 1939
Philip Marlowe
You expect people to lie and are rarely surprised when they do. Raymond Chandler wrote Philip Marlowe as a private detective with a strict personal code in a corrupt city; Marlowe solves cases without expecting a reward before taking the next one.
You are cynical to your friends, but you are also the person they would call at four in the morning.
Humphrey Bogart played Marlowe in the 1946 film The Big Sleep, whose plot is famously difficult to follow.
Elliott Gould, Robert Mitchum and Liam Neeson have also played the character in adaptations from different eras.
Your weakness is a code so strict that it can punish the person who follows it.
