Clint Eastwood’s 98% RT Western Classic Surprises as Streaming Hit

Clint Eastwood is now over 90 years old, and while he may have hung up his camera, it’s not even debatable that he’s had one of the most legendary careers of any actor or director in Hollywood history. Back in 2024, Eastwood brought his final movie to the world with Juror #2, but most fans didn’t get the chance to experience it on the big screen. Despite some of the strongest reviews of any Eastwood-directed film ever, Warner Bros. opted not to put the movie in theaters. It was instead dumped straight onto streaming on HBO Max, where it’s still one of the most popular movies around the world over two years later. Eastwood has committed his entire life to giving the world not only some of the most iconic westerns of all time, but also some of the most entertaining movies ever.

If someone were to make a list of the most famous Clint Eastwood movies ever made, it would be hard to omit A Fistful of Dollars. The 1964 Western is the perfect mash-up of Yellowstone and Peaky Blinders, ideal for fans looking to scratch the Western itch in a story that features warring rival families. Eastwood did not direct A Fistful of Dollars, but he did star in the film as Joe, and legendary writer/director Akira Kurosawa also reportedly made contributions to the script. If there was any sign that A Fistful of Dollars came from a different era of movies, the film cost only $200,000 to make, which is a fraction of the salary many stars earn for a single movie now. In America, the film is currently streaming for free on Pluto TV and Tubi, and it’s one of the most popular VOD purchases in several countries.

What Is ‘A Fistful of Dollars’ About?

A Fistful of Dollars follows a wandering gunslinger who pits a pair of rival families against each other due to their unflinching greed and desire for revenge. The film grossed over $14 million at the box office against its $200k budget, so it’s safe to say that it was a massive financial success. The film also earned scores of 98% from critics and 91% from audiences on the aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes.
