It was scorching, and nearly every artist commented on the intense heat ā from Rachel Chinouriri stating, āitās fāing hot, Jesusā¦the U.K. aināt like thisā during her 12:30 p.m. set to Chappell Roan introducing her hit āHOT TO GO!ā near the end of her 7 p.m. by saying, āthis next song is very fitting, I feel.ā Bikini Killās Kathleen Hanna, Mitski and Doechii were among those who reminded fans to hydrate ā with Hanna herself taking long sips from her reusable bottle boasting an āfāk iceā sticker.
Such was the ethos of the day: Stand for something, and look out for one another.Ā
It was just two months ago that Olivia Rodrigo announced Daisy Chain Fields, her very own music festival, along with its Daisy Chain Fields Fund. āTruly never felt more excited to share a piece of news with you all,ā Rodrigo wrote on Instagram at the time. āIāve had a dream of doing this festival for years and I am so ecstatic itās finally coming true!!ā
Today, Saturday (Aug. 29), fans felt firsthand how Daisy Chain Fields was always meant so much more than just a festival ā and in fact, it could even change how such events operate going forward. Boasting an all-women lineup of Oliviaās āheroes and friends,ā and with 100% of the net proceeds going to charities dedicated to advancing and advocating for women and girls, Rodrigo created something much greater than a day of music: She amplified a mission and supercharged a movement.
The day before fans flocked to Irvine, Calif. for the one-day festival (on Friday, Aug. 28), Rodrigo held a press conference to share a sizeable piece of news: Ticket sales alone brought in $10 million for the festās 10 nonprofit partners. (Partners include Baby2Baby, Black Mamas Matter Alliance, Center for Reproductive Rights, FreeFrom, Jhpiego, Johns Hopkins Center for Indigenous Health, National Domestic Workers Alliance, National Institute for Reproductive Health, National Womenās Law Center and Planned Parenthood.)
While speaking at the presser, Rodrigo also name-checked the iconic Lilith Fair tour, saying its founder, Sarah McLachlan, was one of the first people she called while in the early stages of making her dream a reality. Tonight, to cap off her own historic first fest, Rodrigo welcomed McLachlan ā along with Alanis Morissette and Stevie Nicks ā on stage during her stellar headlining set.
Prior to performing, Rodrigo welcomed Melinda French Gates to the stage to announce the philanthropist had doubled the $10 million in funds raised ā bringing Daisy Chain Fieldsā total donation amount to $20 million.Ā
In Rodrigoās same Instagram caption from two months ago, she had ended it by saying: āI firmly believe that joy, community and music can be the drivers of meaningful change and Iām hopeful this festival will be just that.ā
In its first year, it already was. And thankfully, as Rodrigo revealed at the end of her set, it will continue to be. As she enthusiastically declared, āsee you next year!ā
Until then, read on for the best moments from the inaugural Daisy Chain Fields music festival.

The Crowdās Message-Driven Festival FitsĀ
Move over, sarcastic and oftentimes degrading t-shirts. At Daisy Chain Fields, feminism is in fashion. Some of the more notable tees and totes carried messages such as: āHeaven knows what a girl can do,ā āA life worth fighting for,ā āBe a better humanā and āThe matriarchy would never.ā
And true to the festās inspiration and intention, pin-back buttons were also all the rage ā led by the branding, which was seen on official festival posters and merch and even the eventās two stages. As a result, many in the crowd were partaking in pin swaps, creating a new take on friendship bracelet trading.

Eliās Journal Entry Live Reading
With her Y2K-inspired style complementing the colorful streaks in her hair, the charismatic pop singer kicked off the festival at the Dandelion main stage with an energetic set featuring breakout hit āGirl of Your Dreamsā and āFāk the DJ.ā
But it wasnāt just her performance that started the day off right ā it was her activism, too. On theme with the festival, Eli announced she would be donating a portion of her record advance, reading a journal entry from her phone to offer a glimpse into the beliefs behind her decision. āI do not wish to impress you, nor do I want to prove a point amongst my past critics of the unethical and inhumane nature of billionaires possessing more than half the wealth of the entire world,ā she read. āEveryone without their basic human needs met ā healthcare, shelter, food, freshwater, emotional and mental wellbeing ā this journal entry is to show you my fundamental belief that we must redistribute wealth.ā

Rachel Chinouririās Big Realization
As one of the first artists to take the Marigold Stage, English artist Rachel Chinouriri used her set to give fans a taste of whatās to come, asking if they wanted to hear a new song. After an enthusiastic response, she rewarded them with āAAAHHH,ā a new track from her upcoming second album,I think I spoke too soon, out Oct. 16. She shared itās largely about her 20s and ārealizing I can become whoever I want to be.ā
Bringing the heat from beginning to end, Chinouriri maintained an infectious level of energy throughout the set, barely giving herself a moment to slow down. Her constant movement, powerful vocals and genuine connection with the audience made the performance feel effortless and electric ā and an early standout of the day overall.

KATSEYEās (Very Brief) Pop Out
After dropping out of the festival earlier this week due to member Megan spraining her ankle during rehearsals, KATSEYE still made a point of showing up how they could. Just after 1 p.m. on the Dandelion main stage, members Yoonchae, Lara and Megan appeared, much to the crowdās surprise. āWeāre so disappointed that we canāt perform today on stage, but my ankle is on hiatus,ā shared Megan. āBut our hearts are definitely not.ā
āWeāre sending all of our love to Olivia and this beautiful community that she built at Daisy Chain Fields. Weāre so happy to be here and show as much support as we can,ā she continued. āThank you for letting us be a small part of this.ā
The three then welcomed Baby2Baby representatives on stage ā keeping in line with the dayās run of show where various performers were introduced by representatives from each nonprofit partner ā who then introduced alternative pop artist Devon Again who was booked in place of KATSEYE.

Devon Againās Reaction To Last-Minute Addition: āDuh, Bāh!ā

Santigoldās Hits-Filled Time Machine
Santigoldās set was everything a longtime fan of the artist would hope for considering a good portion of the setlist spotlighted hits off her 2008 acclaimed self-titled debut album (āL.E.S. Artistes,ā āShove It,ā āLights Outā) and second set Master of My Make-Believe (āDisparate Youth,ā āGo!ā). Even better? The songs seemed to spark as much joy for Santigold as they did for the crowd.
And early into the set she mused on what brought her here: āI canāt believe she pulled this sāt off; this is amazing,ā she said referring to Olivia and her fest. āThis is most important; if it werenāt for women none of us would be here. We do know this right?!ā

Bikini Kill Offer Advice to Young People (and Cis White Men)
After delivering a speech about how U.S government doesnāt āgive a sāt,ā lead singer Kathleen Hanna explains that āit makes it hard for me sometimes to have a good time because itās hard to turn it offā¦and I was thinking that on my way here what a gift we have to be able to play for you. What a gift Olivia has given all of us with this festival.ā
The crowd gave their own gift in return: their full attention. āThis is most engaged audience I have ever seen in my life,ā Hannah later remarked after telling stories that inspired their song āFeels Blind.ā
Fortunately sheās never short on stories or wisdom ā especially when audience is so attentive. Near set’s end she shared this simple instruction: āIām 57; keep teaching those older than you,ā she said. āDonāt give up; if youāre cis white male tell your friends stop treating women like shit.ā

After gently laying down some house rules ā “Identify security people around you,” “If you feel faint no shame just sit down where you are,” “If you have sunscreen please apply it” ā Mitski delivered a gorgeous set that offered calming respite from high energy and higher heat up until that point.
Halfway through she couldnāt help but reflect on how “this was such good idea,” before sharing how ended up on bill: “Olivia called me on my cell phone personally; will you do this? Big festival benefiting women and girls? āYeah Iāll find time.āā
āI feel like we should do this every year,” Mitski continued. “Weāll get say we were at first ever Daisy Chains.ā
