The central question around the DCU reboot has always been about continuity. Why did John Cena’s Peacemaker and select elements from The Suicide Squad make the cut while Henry Cavill’s Superman did not? James Gunn recently clarified his reasoning on Threads after a fan asked if a full recasting was ever seriously considered.
Gunn revealed that contractual obligations played a major role in the decision. “Peacemaker Season 2 deals were all in place when I became head of DC,” James Gunn explained. “It was either break everyone’s contracts and pay out all that money and take away HBO Max’s biggest show at the time or find a way to make it work. I chose the latter.”
The financial reality of dismantling a hit series simply didn’t make sense. However, the choice wasn’t purely a business move. Gunn’s personal connection to the material sealed the deal. He added, “Mostly tho because I love the character and the show and thought he/they could be an important part of the DCU.”
This practical yet passionate approach defines the early days of the new DCU. Fans have already experienced three distinct James Gunn projects: Creature Commandos, Superman, and Peacemaker Season 2. These releases spanned animation, film, and live-action TV, yet they all carried Gunn’s concoction of comedy, emotion, and action. Even the upcoming Supergirl, starring Milly Alcock, seems to maintain that specific tonal feel based on its trailer.
