Everyone loves a heist thriller, perhaps because secretly we all love the idea of stealing lots of money and getting away with it. But a true heist thriller can’t be plainly straightforward; it’s got to have a bit more meat on the bones. This is a prime example of that idea. Twenty years on from the premiere of one of the most layered crime films of the 2000s, viewers are about to find out once more if crime truly does pay.
Inside Man is breaking back into the Netflix vaults from June 1, giving people the chance to witness Spike Lee‘s $186 million heist thriller again, or for the first time. The plot revolves around a group of bank robbers who stage a daring robbery on a Wall Street bank, but not all is as it appears. The movie follows three characters — the NYPD negotiator trying to figure out what the robbers actually want, the mysterious fixer who enters the picture to protect a seriously dark secret connected to the bank’s owner, and the genius behind the robbery. Now, that does seem like a fairly straightforward plot, but the movie has so many twists and turns in it that you’ll never see the direction in which it goes. Even the hostages are part of the plan.
Inside Man stars Denzel Washington (Training Day) as Detective Keith Frazier, the NYPD negotiator handling the case; Clive Owen (Children of Men) as Dalton Russell, the mastermind behind the robbery; Jodie Foster (The Silence of the Lambs) as Madeleine White, a fixer; Christopher Plummer (Knives Out) as Arthur Case, the bank chairman; Willem Dafoe (Spider-Man) as Captain John Darius; Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years a Slave) as Detective Bill Mitchell, Frazier’s partner; and Kim Director (Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2) as Stevie, one of Dalton’s crew members.
