Epic Sci-Fi Movies Ranked: The Top 10 of the Last Century

It may sound wild, but the science fiction genre in cinema has been around for more than a century. Over the past 100 years, sci-fi has welcomed audiences to some of the most profound and incredible storytelling, with stories that range from space sagas to time travel thrillers. Indeed, the genre has pushed our imagination to fascinating places.

With a vast net of styles within this sprawling umbrella, the sci-fi epic has proven to be an audience favorite. These stories feature large-scale storytelling with extraordinary stakes and expansive worlds. From game-changing space operas to technology-infused wonders, the sci-fi epics of the last 100 years have been incredibly influential and important to pop culture and entertainment at large.

‘Stalker’ (1979)

Though it may not often appear in the same conversation as many of the subsequent titles, Stalker is unlike the traditional sci-fi epic. The Soviet film by Andrei Tarkovsky is set in a bleak, desaturated city next to the Zone, a guarded, forbidden area where normal laws of physics do not work. A man known as the “Stalker” (Alexander Kaidanovsky) makes a living by illegally leading people through the traps and anomalies of the Zone. The goal is to reach the Room at the center of the Zone, where it is rumored to make a person’s deepest wish a reality. But for each individual who enters the Room, they soon learn that it grants their actual subconscious wish rather than what they think they want.

Replacing the typical tropes of the genre, Stalker is a masterful exploration of humanity. Using a mysterious, post-apocalyptic wasteland, Tarkovsky opens up existential concepts. Through a triad of archetypes, each individual represents a different aspect. The Stalker is faith and devotion, the Writer (Anatoly Solonitsyn) is art and inspiration, and the Professor (Nikolai Grinko) is science and rationalism. At its core, Stalker tells a tale about the true horrors of true desire. Holding a 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes, Stalker remains a highly influential work of art.

‘Interstellar’ (2014)

Unafraid to go to the edge to make a masterpiece, Christopher Nolan‘s foray into epic science fiction came with Interstellar. Set in a dystopian near-future where the planet’s ecosystem is dying as the blight leaves humanity with dwindling food and oxygen, former NASA pilot turned farmer Cooper (Matthew McConaughey) is recruited to pilot a mission through a wormhole near Saturn to find a new habitable planet. While traveling near the black hole, time moves differently, causing a real-time strain on Cooper’s connection to his growing children.

Developed alongside theoretical physicist Kip Thorne, Nolan ensured that the science was plausible in order to make the human-driven narrative hit home. Rather than an overly clinical story, Interstellar anchors the cosmic stakes with a heartbreaking father-daughter bond. A masterpiece in direction, Nolan used practical sets and real miniature models to give the project tangibility. Hans Zimmer‘s classically tinged score operates as a ticking clock that gives it a feeling of grandeur. Interstellar is a philosophically ambitious epic where human survival, sacrifice, and love transcend dimensions.

Lifting Frank Herbert‘s novel to epic proportions, Denis Villeneuve did the unthinkable: he turned the seemingly unfilmable story into a brilliantly visceral masterpiece. While the first film set the tone, Dune: Part Two elevated the story to new heights. Picking up where the first film left off, it tells the story of Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet) as he fights alongside the native Fremen, where he begins to be worshiped as their prophesied messiah. He then comes into conflict with the Harkonnens, setting the stage for a massive galactic holy war.

The film faithfully takes Herbert’s iconic book and turns the second part into a cautionary tale about charismatic leaders and religious fanaticism. While Paul arises as a hero in the first part, he emerges as an individual on a tragic descent, torn between personal revenge and his dark destiny. With extraordinary technical craft, Villeneuve miraculously builds a colossal world where the sandy deserts of Arrakis and the monochromatic grit of Giedi Prime feel immersive. It’s the perfect setup for the highly anticipated Dune: Part Three.
