Evil Dead Burn Director Suggests 1990s Comedy for Dark Reboot

Evil Dead Burn may be a horror film, but director Sébastien Vaniček plans to reboot a comedy next. The upcoming sequel will continue the franchise’s tradition of mixing gruesome gore with campy humor.

Which 1990s comedy movie does the director of Evil Dead Burn want to reboot?

In a recent Reddit AMA, Vaniček was asked which IP other than Evil Dead he would like to reboot if given the chance. Vaniček answered, “I think I would dig into THE MASK, but make it closer to the comic books. The comic books are actually very, very violent and dark.”

The Mask was conceived as a comedy-horror hybrid when it was released in the early 1990s. However, its 1994 adaptation turned it into a full-blown comedy, with Jim Carrey in the title role bringing his usual goofy charm. The film was a massive success, grossing over $351 million and spawning a sequel, Son of the Mask, and an animated series. The franchise has since remained dormant, but that might change if Vaniček follows through on his comment. In contrast to Vaniček’s comments, The Mask’s director wants Jim Carrey to play an iconic horror movie villain.

Evil Dead Burn released earlier this week to positive reviews, earning its place among the higher echelons of the franchise while subverting horror traditions. ComingSoon also praised the film with an 8/10 review, calling it a “groovy” experience that would make franchise creator Sam Raimi proud. The Evil Dead series started with the 1981 film, spawning five sequels and a sixth on the way. Following 1993’s Army of Darkness, the subsequent films have largely remained stand-alone affairs, save for some surprising connections to the originals.
